El Palomar Restaurant Monterey
The menu here is packed full of intriguing coastal specialties from South of the Border. The spacious and tastefully decorated interior with its tiered floors, assures one as to the quality of the food the moment one enters. Seafood is rendered into piquant dishes that can be ordered with confidence and that are served graciously. There is also plenty of chicken, beef, pork and a traditional array of enchiladas, chiles rellenos, pozole, and vegetarians will not be left wanting either. The bar is well stocked a variety tequilas and Mexican beers, as well as fine, locally grown wines. See website for menu, event calendar and more.
Whenever I come to Monterey I am sure to come to the El Palomar! It is a fantastic place to eat and would never miss coming here! The food and drinks are fantastic along with the prices!! The chips and salsa to die for along with their forzen margaritas!! Definitely give it a try when you are in town!!
We came across this restaurant by accident. Staying across the street and couldn't believe how big it is. Great food and service. And surprise, live music and salsa dancing. We stayed and danced all night. A perfect ending to our vacation.
My family and I are headed to Monterey again and can't wait to visit our favorite resturant El Palomar. I love the chicken rolls and their large appetizer platters. The margaritas are always great! For dinner my favorites are Camarones a la Michoacana and their Salmon dish, love the sauce!!!
The food did not taste like mexican food at all and the use of the cabbage is odd. My dish didn't taste like fish but the beans were very bland and they used a lot of them. It seemed to compensate for not using much meat at all. I felt like I payed for carne asada that was not existent. The chips they serve are a bit stale and definately come out of a bag. And I have never ever tasted salsa like that. The service was fine but we were the only ones there so it should've been. It didn't give me a stomach ache or that bloaty feel you sometimes get after mexican so thats a plus but it's not enough to make me go back there again.
This restruant was absoloutely AWFUL. The worst mexican restaurant I have ever eaten at. It was not your imiagination. The beans and rice absolutely DO taste fishy. They use cabbage instead of lettuce. On top of all that we are SURE they overcharged us by a very significant amount. We complained to the manager - to no avail... They determine the amount of your tip AND charge you tax against the amount of the tip. The menu states they will charge you $5 for a to-go box for your leftovers. Who would want to take home poor leftover food in the first place? BUYER BEWARE. We go to Monterey quite often and will NEVER EVER eat here again!!!
The first review...I agree! The food tasted fishy to me. It should have been a sign to leave when they serve you bad chips. They did look like they came out of the bag. Salsa was different, NOT CHUNKY, More like a soup? They use cabbage instead of lettuce in your taco. NOT AUTHENTIC at all! Would not recommend!!!!!
Heard great things about this place so we tried it on a friday night, not many people first clue we should of left..
the chips were not fresh, tasted stale, honestly we think they were from a bag, looked like Tostito's only worse(Tostito's taste much better) the salsa was great, only thing good the entire meal. The nacho's were made with the same stale chips, beans that were fishy tasting or else bad??? Main course was chicken and shredded beef enchiladas, again a fishy taste and also the rice. no sauce on the enchiladas, service was ok, margaritas were bland, I think they specialize in seafood, which is fine considering this is Monterey, but PLEASE serve the non seafood dishes that don't have a fish taste!!! We had seen the menu on the webpage and it has plenty of non seafood dishes so what happened???? Will stay with going to El Indio at Del Monte Center down the street is a better choice or El Torito on Cannery Row.
I'm not a huge fan of Mexican food, but I thoroughly enjoyed my experience. The decor is comfortable and the food delicious. I had the artichoke enchiladas- something I've never had or even seen on a menu before. They were marvelous. The protions were plentiful and the price just right. I would like to have eaten on the patio, but my companion was too cold. Maybe next time!
Based on the (older) positive reviews, we went there June 8, 2007. Building is an old
auto shop, remodeled. Plain enough, but nothing special. NOISY open space, not seperated from the bar.
Food was mediocre, with a lot of strange,
(not good) sauces.Drinks, (margaritas)
were watery, with not much alcohol. Found one thing very strange-
On Friday night, the bar had around 30 patrons, WITHOUT a single woman. Is this an
underground gay bar?
Anyway, the next time you are in Monterery,
pass this by.
