I first tried Compagnos 15 years ago, when I was a 19-year-old private in The Army, studying Spanish at DLI. At the time, it was the best sandwich I had ever eaten, but then again, I was only 18 and hadn't experienced enough of the world for that statement to mean much. I returned to Monterey 3 years later, to study Mandarin Chinese. At this point, I had a wife and child, had seen more of the world, and it was still the best sandwich I had ever eaten. But, 21 still just 21. Since then, I had traveled all over the world, lived in Tokyo for 3-years, got out of The Army, started my own investment banking firm in New York City, eaten at delis all over the world, including many world-famous Delis. I just returned to Monterey, this time by choice (not because The Army told me too) and couldn't wait to try Compagnos again. Well, I can say without equivocation that Compagnos still makes the best sandwiches I've ever eaten.
The best sandwiches come from Compagno's.. if you go during the lunch hour there will most likely be a line out the door... Aside from the sandwiches there are different drinks available from all over the world and the side dishes and cakes are yummmmy... The sandwiches are pretty big though.. I usually share mine with a friend... love love love this place! : )
Being from a predominantly Italian town in upstate New York, I never thought I would find a shop to rival my hometown Natoli's Market. I was at Presidio Monterey for a year in 1982 where I met my adorable husband and we both found Compagno's to be the absolute best sandwich shop we have ever come across in our world travels with the military. We are returning in April of this year for an anniversary trip and can't to again experience the party for our tastebuds that Compagno's sandwiches create!!
This deli may look unassuming, but these are the best sandwiches in the county. No joke. There's a reason that the lunch line can trail out the door. One sandwich can feed 4 people for around $6. Now that's value. I love the #27. Brocolli salad is also a personal fave.
I try to talk myself into going to other places to get a sandwich, but just can't bring myself to it. OK, I have on occasion have strayed from my beloved whole #2 on flatbread, mayo & mild mustard, all the veggies with provolone but I found myself still hungry and unhappy. These sandwich are the staple for which I judge all other sandwiches by...so far, no one comes close!!! not to mention their worldly selection of beer and the to die for deserts!
