Nepenthe, Big Sur

i have visited the magical nepenthe on two birthdays in a row while visiting my sister. i will never forget how special the atmosphere is there. it is a healing place and i will make the trip from ohio again just to sit up on the deck and soak in the spirits of the place, and i don't mean just the wine. I have no idea what the big stink is people are making over the prices. i am more than willing to spend $20.00 on a glass of beautiful wine, a fabulous sandwich and an appetizer, which is what i paid last year. i have spent money in worse ways!! if i ever win the lotto, i would make a bid on the place. until then, i will be happy to make the trip to nepenthe, spend my @20.00 or so, and go home happy. sincerly, joyce leonard

This wonderful restaurant has become our favorite spot for weekend getaways and romantic dinners. I discovered it on an impromptu visit to Big Sur and we've returned every weekend we can since then, always arriving just in time for sunset. The view of the sunset over the ocean is amazing and a wonderful way to begin or end your evening. The servers are attentive, knowledgeable, and considerate. The food is imaginative and delicious. It's well worth the drive, well worth the moderate expense, and there are several lovely lodges nearby available to make a weekend out of the trip. I really can't say enough about how great a dinner experience at Nepanthe is, and I highly recommend it to everyone.

It is true, the view is beautiful!! But the food, although tasty, is over priced. We were advised by a local (and friend) to stop in for a drink and the view and move on. We did just that. We enjoyed a drink, shared a cheese plate, took in the view and hit the road.

With excellent service from our server Angus, we spent an great anniversary evening enjoying the sunset and fine food over a bottle of fine wine from Garys' Vineyard (yes, that is plural). Be prepared, the menu prices are a little on the upper-middle side, but are well forth it for the great food and experience. I'd recommend it to everyone going through the area as a MUST!

Last year I drove from San Francisco to Los Angeles, and the portion of the trip from Monterey to San Simeon on Highway 1 is truly beautiful. The rugged coastline of Big Sur is definitely worth a visit regardless of your age and interests, as long as you don't mind the spectacular scenery and pleasant athmosphere, of course... One of the highlights of the trip was my stop at Nepenthe. The restaurant served great food, the mood was easy-going and the views...wow! Make sure to spend at least a good hour here, in order to let the tranquility of the place make a lasting memory. A fast food attitude does not work here at all.

While one normally goes to a restaurant for food, it takes close back seat to the experience as a whole. I can not imagine a more beautiful place to eat other than their deck.
