Nepenthe, Big Sur

I found absolutely nothing negative about this Big Sur destination! Sure, there was a 45 minute wait but who cares when you can enjoy a glass of wine overlooking the Pacific! The entire time I was visiting Nepenthe, I felt like I was at my own summer home. The staff were extended family members who were there to make sure that I felt this way. Nepenthe has fine food (especially the creme brulee...you must try it!)and an excellent wine selection. While we were there, there was a large wedding party next to us. Usually, this would have disturbed me, but not at Nepenthe! Once again, I felt like I was a part of the larger picture.

I went there in 1974 with my fiance , his brother and his wife . I could never find it anywhere in the later years because I guess I spelled it wrong . My first husband passed away but I always remembered when we went there . I just got the AAA book in the mail and I saw ads for Carmel so it made me remember and I tried to find it again and this time I did . It looked just like it did then from what I recall . I would have went there again on my way down the coast but didn't have time . I just remember how wonderful it was eating dinner there on that great weekend in 1974 . It must have been a good place because I never have forgotten it . I hope I can go again someday . Elaine ( Loftus ) Gray

I thought it was outstanding food. The view was amazing, and the price was very reasonable. This is all said without thought of the history of it all.

I enjoyed the view, the appetizers and the wines. The Famous Ambrosiaburger is a disaster and the duck was only good. I emailed them about my experience and received no response. Maybe they only like good reviews. I guess they think I will not go back and they are correct.

I request visiting Nepenthe, Big Sur, Ca. each time we visit family in Monterey. I have celebrated a birthday there, it was one I will always remember. I will go back every chance I have. I love everything about Nepenthe. Would love to celebrate a 50th anniversary there! Kansas

The only thing this place has going for it is it's location. It's got a great view over looking the Pacific Coast. The food was only OK for what you paid... we had a $33 steak (I felt a better price would've been $25) and my girlfriend got the ambrosiaburger $13? The burger was a tiny piece of meat for the bread they put it in. You get a couple bites of meat and the rest is just bread... Be aware they don't offer free refills on sodas. We got a diet coke ($2.75) filled with mostly ice (not worth it). Our server seemed to not really care about being there. We asked for more bread but it never came (though he did acknowledge). He was very slow on fulfilling our requests... (he seemed to hang around for a few minutes talking to the other workers there before coming back to us). When asked for the check , he made his round to all the other tables and then when he noticed us looking at him, it seemed that he just remembered that he had a check for us. Once again, the ambiance is great here, but everything else is pretty average. What you're paying for here is the view.

Well it is simply awwsome. From the 1 of a kind shop to the awesome resturant its a place of dreams you see awesome wild life and get all the luxury you want or not want you chose i put my word on it be there soon it rocks~~~~~~~~~~~

Besides the lovely drive down the Big Sur coast and the view, Nepenthes makes the best veggie burger I've ever had. Their 3 bean salad complements the burger well, along with a pot af jasmine tea. The history of the resturant and its romantic setting make this place a definite destination for me when I head down the Big Sur coast.
