With my family comming from three provences in Italy, Tuscany,Pimonte and Sicily
and being familar with true Italian food Il fornaio Carmel presents Italian food at its best! Maggiano and Olive Garden chains are not Italian, they are the Taco Bell of Italian restaurants. God Bless Il Fornaio carmel.
In the heart of Carmel, Il Fornaio is an oasis of great bread, olive oil, pasta, steak and the rare full-bar. The self-service cafe is where the locals hang out. You might even see Clint having dinner there. It a locals place - incredible when you consider it's part of a chain.
Avoid this place!!! It's as if the place was managed by The Marx Brothers without the fun!
We recently, 11/24/07, had the unfortunate occasion to dine at this restaurent. Despite having a reservation, we were kept waiting for 1 hr.
Once seated, our server disappeared for 15 minutes. Only reappearing to take drink orders, but not food order. 15 minutes later he came by for food order. Upon arrival 25 minutes later with dinner (finally), one plate had to be sent back as it was dirty!!
Food was just OK. Given the choices of interesting local restaurents, spend your money else where!!!
As a local, I've given Il Fornaio three chances and they just can't seem to get it right. The service has always been very poor and the food (besides the takeout baked goods, which are very good) is below average. The dump loads of salt on everything. It may have been good years ago, but not anymore. Besides, there are so many better Italian restaurants to eat on the Peninsula, such as Matteo's and Alberto's, both in Pacific Grove.

The dining experience here is superb. On the walls inside, find license plates, skillets, signs, toys, and all sorts of
collectibles. On the patio outside is a stone rotisserie that cooks many of the meats. The menu has an ...
