Grill on Ocean Avenue (The)
The decor of this upscale restaurant in downtown Carmel is sophisticated yet comfortable. The airy dining area has an exposed-beam ceiling, arched windows and white linen tablecloths. The menu features Beef Carpaccio, Duck Ravioli and a number of other items that balance on the fine line between eclectic and pretentious. Favorites such as rack of lamb and fresh catch are also available. The not-too-lengthy wine list features vintages from Napa, Sonoma and Monterey.
Very cordial and friendly service, but two mistakes from the kitchen and bar (not what we ordered). Great job on the scalloped potatoes and French fries, and the rack of lamb was excellent. But one of the strip steaks - cooked perfectly - had a truly astonishing volume of gristle and fat, while the other one was a little better quality but medium at one end and dead rare at the other (how do they DO that???) Vegetables were humdrum but at least not overdone. Prices were close to high-end, even for Carmel, so you may want to look elsewhere for a more convincing dining investment.
We thought this was a charming little place initially; the ambiance was nice and cozy. However, the food was very bland, no flavor at all. I had the fish special for the day. It was very dry and they served it with plan white rice, so it turned out rather boring. When my fianc
Solid eats. The food was good - not too terribly creative. We started with the Brie appetizer - it was okay, interesting mix of flavors, the spiced pecans were amazing, the rest was just okay.
I had the NY Strip - a lot of food, probably a 10-12 oz cut, excellent smokey flavor. The cut of beef had a lot of connective tissue so it was very difficult to cut and very chewy. I would go with the Filet next time. My wife had the seafood linguini - it was okay, solid not spectacular or unique.
Didn't have any dessert (wife wouldn't let me). Wine list, although not extensive, they had a few good bottles.
Our family is not a big seafood loving family, so that may reflect our review. We found the steaks OK. The appetizers were very good. We had the duck ravioli and roasted garlic with brie. Service was OK, but we really enjoyed the Merlot Bistro across the street a lot more, with a lot more selections on the menu.
my husband and I were staying in Carmel for our 10th wedding anniversary and the La Playa hotel recommended the Grill. Out of all the restaraunts in Carmel the Grill is a must do. My husbands steak was perfect and I had prawns with an asian style coconut sauce. The casual yet professional attitude of our waiter made us feel right at home.....You must try the Grill
My husband and I were in Carmel recently, and went to The Grill because the fireplace was inviting, and the manager was so sweet and warm. She gave us a warm welcome and a great table. The waiter we had was helpful, too. He was very positive about the chef's specials, so we took his advice. I loved my swordfish, it was so gorgeous, and it was soooo delicious! My husband had the rack of lamb, and poor him, I ate a lot of that, too. The waiter helped us with the local selection of wine I wasn't familiar with, and was attentive through the whole meal.
I would love to return to Carmel soon, and I would go there first. I took note of our waiter, John, so pleasant, and He said the chef was fairly new, Toby, but his food is awesome, great! The business card at the door had Margo as the manager, and our experience was wonderful. Go!
