Pacific's Edge Restaurant
Perched high atop a granite cliff overlooking Point Lobos State Reserve, migrating whales may be seen from every table in the dining room. USA Today selected us as "One of the Top 10 Restaurants in America With a View." Sunsets here are so spectacular that the entire dining room often breaks out in spontaneous applause. Pair a bottle of Domaine Bertagna Vougeot Clos de la Perriere with our Maple Glazed Smoked Duck Breast with Duck Confit and Strawberry-Rhubarb Chutney. We have just been awarded Zagat Restaurants' Guide "Best Decor" award for the entire greater Bay Area, including Napa, San Francisco, Monterey and Carmel. Amber mica lanterns, Santa Lucia fir beams and granite boulder walls evoke the local mood of the Big Sur rugged coast and mountains. This is the premier place for a special occasion when people like to dress up, look their best, and go somewhere they shall always remember. Come delight your senses in a magical setting.
This is definitely an amazing dining experience. The view was absolutely amazing. You literally are sitting on the coastline and able to enjoy to gorgeous view. The food and service is what you expect from a high end restaurant. I had the rib eye and the short ribs. They were both quite tasty. It is a great place for a date night.
Locals just laugh at people who go one floor up to pay high prices, tiny portions, and at one time they tried to charge $20. for a window seat. The extreme bargain and value is the California Market in the same building.
Outdoor seating, friendly service, great food, views of the Pacific Ocean that will not stop. Valet parking and you tip the retriever of your car nicely. My favorite place to eat on the peninsula. You will not be disappointed.
Without a doubt it was one of the best meals I have ever had with some of the best service I have ever had. I must say at the prices they charge it better be the best meal of your life. My wife and I went for our 10 year anniversary. We saw the menu the day before and almost canceled the reservation. Lucky we didnt. The next day the menu had changed much more to our liking. I had the chiefs menu with the wine pairing for $175. Yes that is dinner for one. Every course was perfect; the wines were just as good and matched each course.
We've been twice in the last 18 months and it's a staple of our trip to the California Coast. Any trip for us would be incomplete without a meal here. The service is both acommodating and patient. Even if you are here late at night, you're never rushed. The bar is a great place for a pre-dinner drink as well. Last, but certainly not least, this may be the best view of the Carmel highlands and coastline that anyone offers. It's fantastic. Go here for sunset and eat through the evening.
Normally we have a 4 course pix fixe menu and it's never disappointed in the least. The quail with calvados gastrique is something we both dream about when going through our desert island top 5 dishes.
My only negative is the wine list pricing, which at a glance seems to be a 200% markup. HOWEVER, you can bring your own bottle of wine. They had no problem with us bringing our 1997 Spottswoode, with a fairly priced corking fee (I think it was $35? - I can't remember) considering the breadth and depth of the wine list. Consistent winners of the top awards from Spectator & Enthusiast and such.
The location is incomparable, of course, but the ambience and service were outstanding -- felt like we were welcome and special guests in our host's dining room, not mere customers being served by a waiter. Each course chosen was beautifully presented, and equally delicious. Although the portions are presented as smaller, the end result was more food than we could consume, and we each had only 3 courses. Completely unsurpassed, and we will definitely return one day.
