That 2009 review made me laugh. Very accurate assessment of both. The Trading Post is the best sit down restaurant by far. The chef is internationally trained. The staff is excellent. The food is to die for. Very comfortable and delightful mountain atmosphere. And for a quick sandwich/ ice cream /coffees /sticky bread ---Norm's Shaver Lake Deli just a little ways down on the same side of the street --great place also. And the Knotty Pines Cabins nearby is a super place to stay. Owners will bend over backwards to make sure you enjoy your visit.
When we started asking around there was only two places in Shaver Lake that served good steaks The Trading Post and allegedly Trappers at the point. We chose Trappers because it was reported to seat bigger groups. When we walked into Trappers the atmosphere was OK just OK, we then stood by the cash register and watched for almost twenty minutes as the waitress/ receptionist walked past us several times without one word or even a look of acknowledgment while she served the few tables that were occupied and talked with a few locals in the bar. Finally the cook showed some compassion and came out and asked if we had reservations, which we did not because the individual that we talked to when we called did not mention we needed one. He then looked around at the empty dining area and sheepishly offered the excuse that they were really booked tonight. We looked behind us and there wasn't another potential patron in site but got the picture none the less. We were not wanted!!! While perturbed at the time, in retrospect, it was the best thing that could have happened to us. If the service started out that way imagine how it would have evolved through the evening. So with fingers crossed we decided to try The Trading Post, and thank God we did. We were immediately greeted by a friendly face with a smile saying that it would be a wait, no problem, and that they were busy and service might be a little slow. Ten minutes later our party of ten was seated and drinks were on the table. GOOD drinks!!! The atmosphere was nostalgic and reminded me of sitting at a friends house for dinner. The service was excellent which produced a much deserved 25% tip for our waiter and the food was incredible. The New York didn't even need A-1 sauce. Overall I have to give The Trading Post an A+ and would highly recommend them to anyone. It wasn't just dinner it was an experience.
What more could you want! Awsome food, bar, and friendly service! Yes the prices are high, yet you do get what you pay for, and then some! Make sure to check out the local history as you walk in the front door!
