Terrible restaurant....terrible service....terrible place to be ......ENOUGH SAID...I grew up in the area and have seen this place change owners several times...This place has to be the worst it has ever been. YOu want a good steak and a good time go to McLIntocks in Shell Beach right don the road...At least they are still family owned and operate unlike this sell-out corporate chain now
Sept 13, 2009 I had company for northern Calif here for the weekend. We went to AJ Spurs in Grover for dinner. The soup and beans was the only enjoyable part of the meal. The pilaf that comes with the meal tastes like it is out of a box. AJ offers no baked potatoes with their meals. A baked potato would be a big improvement and a welcome option. I had halibut and it was overcooked. Everyone else had steaks at the table. All of the steaks had a piece of gristle running through them and all were tough. All the steaks had a large amount of fat around the edge of the meat. Last night we went to dinner at Applebee's in Arroyo Grande. It is SAD TO SAY but the sirloin at Applebee's was more flavorful and tender than the steaks we had at AJ Spurs. I prefer the steaks at Applebee's to the steaks at AJ Spurs. Also if you want a really tender piece of steak nothing beats Tahoe Joe's. Never again will I go to AJ Spurs. They need a complete revamp of their menu.
If your in the Pismo Beach area you have to visit Aj Spurs for dinner. But do not eat lunch, they will serve you so much food that you will need a wheel barrow to get to your car. I had the Chicken Alfredo which was by far the best chicken Alfredo I have ever had, others at the table had the beef ribs and the pork ribs. The portions were huge, and a starter and dessert are all included in the meal. The service was excellent, our waitress was really nice and waited until we swallowed before asking if everything was ok. I would come back to this place again, but I wont eat lunch next time.
What a great experience. This is a restaurant that my family, friends, and I will for sure visit again and again. We went on a very busy night and did not have reservations, the friendly staff took us anyway and made us feel welcome. We had to wait about twenty minutes but it did not matter, there was a wonderful entertainer in the bar that was singing and playing guitar and the time went by very quickly. Once we sat down and started eating it just got better and better. The food was terrific and the service was top rate. The people at AJ Spurs have done a great job making us return customers.
I don't know Who these people are that have such high praise for this greasy spoon. But they can't possible talking about A.J.Spurs,
The food is over priced and over cooked. The steaks are tough and the poor excuse for potatoes are too chewy and almost rubbery.
When I mentioned this to the server I was just ignored.
When I gave our server a $100 bill for the $72 dollar tab, she had the nerve to ask me if I wanted change.
In conclusion, I will never go back and I'll be sure to share my A.J.Spurs experience with my family and friends.
I am looking forward to my next steak dinner at the establishment just down the street. This will probably get posted but at least I feel better.
This restaurant has fantastic steak of you just have to have the beef! You get tons of food if you order the lunch or dinner. I got salad, soup, bread, fried potatoes and onions, a vegetable, rice, 8oz New York steak, plus a liquer. I actually got about 3 meals out of the one dinner. It's a bit expensive, my bill totaled $35, but well worth the money paid. The inside is decorated in a cabin type setting. I could have done without all of the animal heads hanging on the walls, but the antler chandeliers were an awsome sight. The service was so-so. Our particular waitress wasn't very attentive. There were a couple of times we had to wait for our drinks to be refilled. Aside from that minor detail, the overall experience was a good one. I'll definitely be going back again once I have the money!
