This was the worst Japanese food I have had in a long time. The yakisoba tasted more like some kind of peppered pasta. I could actually smell the bleach left on the miso soup bowl from being washed. I thought I was drinking swimming pool water. I lived in Japan for three years and I know Japanese food. I actually went to Akira with my Japanese friend, visiting here from Osaka. He and I were both shocked by the overpriced, tasteless food. His sukiyaki was unrecognizable, all he could bear to eat was the white rice. The service was just as bad as the food. The waitress was terribly rude and short with us. We couldn't find her after she served our food and had to ask the hostess for our check! I never make complaints like this online but this restaurant was so awful I knew I had to pass the word on. DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME OR MONEY HERE.
I remember when Akira s first came to Bakersfield about 30 years ago. It was Wonderful! and still is to this day, Great Food, Service, and the Staff are the Best! I feel like part of the Family when my wife and I walk in.
I've been to Akira's a few times and every time I go, it's always the same; depressing with nasty food and music. Who wants to dine in a gloomy hole in the wall while horrible korean or japanese music is playing in the background? On top of that, the owner greets you with a scowl, which makes you want to pow him one time in the face. The food is just mediocre. Although Shogun has terrible service, I think they're food is 100 times better. I refuse to waste any more money at this dinky, disgusting place that constantly smells like Raid and mildew. If I could, I would give this place no stars, but one star will have to do.
Love it! I come here to eat every time i come in to town. It fits my expense budget and i feel like i am eating somewhere i cannot afford to. Food quality is excellent, and so is the service. I dont know why others complain but this is my fourth time at this restaurant and I am about to go back tonight. It sucks about the seating arrangement, but I travel alone so it works for me. I am a definate repeat customer.
Good food, but if you only have a party of two and one of you wants to eat sushi while the other wants to eat at the grill, they won't let you sit at the same table. I thought it was ridiculous that you can't eat sushi at the teppan table. They made me sit at the sushi bar because I didn't want to eat the off the teppan menu, while my colleague wanted to order off of the teppan menu at the teppan table. It was simply ridiculous.
One of the best Japanese Resturant in Bakersfield!! The service was great, and the waitress are very helpful and kind. Excellent service!!
Wouls recommend this resturant to anyone without hesitation!! The food is excellent!!
I love it, I know the person at the counter is not that friendly, but the waiters are and the food is great I love to go there. and I agree yes is not that family friendly but at least for me and my husband love it when we want to have our dates. It is very romantic, if you want to have a dark place to have your date.
I hope his post helps you choose to go to akira is good but just don't bring the kids they might get scare of the hotpan.
Akira has been The Japanese Restaurant in Bakersfield for many years.... however, it is now getting strong competition form Tokyo Garden and Ichaban Sushi in East Bakersfield
The most positive thing to say about Akira is that the food is great! The Teppan cooks are all experienced and put on good shows while preparing the food at the Teppanyaki Tables. I usually eat filet mignon or New York Steak with Shrimp... it's my favorite.
The sushi rolls are excellent. My favorite is the flying tiger roll. Always presented well and always cool. Also, on occasion, I have 'maguro' depending on my mood that particular day and it is always tasty.
The minor drawback of Akira is that it has outgrown it's size. It is very very difficult to get in and out of the Teppan area. They have already expanded the restaurant once in the past and it would be money well spent to try and expand again.
The service here is always fast and friendly. However, the owner needs to smile more as he comes across as uppety. I'll keep coming back to Akira!!
