The nickname around the town is Puke-o's... almost everyone I know only eats there to clean out their colon. You can expect to sit on a toilet for a few hours after eating here. There isnt much choice in coalinga, but you would be better off eating your shoe.
Several times, while going from San Francisco to Los Angeles, my brother and I have stopped at Perko's for lunch. I like it. It's better than anything else on the 5 from San Francisco to Los Angeles, which is mostly fast food. It's diner food. Usually, I have the club sandwich which comes with French fries. It's very good. The wait staff are always nice and pleasant. My brother and I are going on another trip to Los Angeles soon, and we are definitely stopping at Perko's for lunch!
My sister and I stopped by Coalinga on our way from Orange County to Santa Cruz. On the advice of two local residents we chose Perkos Cafe for dinner. Perkos is a typical American diner that looks like it was designed in the 1960s-70s (similar to a Denny's that has not yet upgraded its restaurant). There are a lot of Americana memorabilia plastered all along the wall, giving the patron a cozy & laid-back vibe while seated.
I don't usually order anything with beef, chicken, or pork when I eat out, and noticed that over 90% of all dishes had either beef or bacon. Anyhow, I settled with the Fish Tacos dish. The waitress was extremely friendly and helpful with us during our stay. The meal came with a salad, two fish tacos, beans & rice (which was more than I could finish). I immediately noticed that the dish didn't look like what I normally would see at a traditional Tex-Mex resturant (like Baja Fresh or Rubio's). The unusual appearance was followed by an unusual taste when I began to eat the tacos. I immediately sensed that the Fish Tacos, beans, and rice were not cooked by someone that knows how to make Mexican food. The food was bearable but far from enjoyable. My sister, who ordered a chicken burger, was not pleased with her meal either.
Overall I would not recommend patrons who are looking for a full course meal to choose Perkos Cafe. This would be a better pick for a light side dish, coffee, or a dessert.
This restaurant has only one good thing about it. It’s location. The wait staff is friendly. The food is really awful. The owner should try to improve the flavors and taste. Other Perko’s I have been to have better food. I will never return to this location.
