Unbelievable, when you least expect to find a truly great restaurant in the middle of nowhere, just try driving Hwy 198 east of Visalia and just before the entrance to Sequoia National Park we stumbled into The Gateway Restaurant and Lodge. We were greeted at friends, had some great drinks at the bar and then had dinner out on their river patio. What an experience. While we were eating we watched long horn cows across the river and then along came a California black bear. The bear tried catching some ducks, but they were too fast. For dinner my wife had Osso Buco and I had Filet mignon and lobster tail. This was the best meal we had ever had out. After our dinner we inquired about a room, all they had left was a two bedroom house on the river, that the owner graciously let us have for the price of a standard room (119.00). Great setting, terrific food and outstanding service. I would recommend this to anyone who really appreciates the finer things in life.
Best thing - close to the park entrance. But if you like having your room made up, clean towels, clocks that are set to the correct time, lights plugged in... you get the idea. The management was completely unresponsive to requests for service - and you have to walk into the bar to make a request because there are no phones in the rooms and no cell service in Three Rivers.
Up side - no need to leave a tip for housekeeping.
Staff at the hotel was very helpful and nice. Food was great, really good for the size of the town. Room prices very reasonable. Rooms were rustic but very comfortable. Definitely recommend for trip to Sequoia.
I take my Mother and to the Gateway whenever I come back home to Visalia. Our secret... go during the weekdays for lunch. We always get a window seat and have half the place to ourselves. The servers are relaxed and often we enjoy conversation with whoever is serving. Leave your uptight expectations of being treated like you are better than everyone else at home and walk throu the door like a human being and listen to the river! I garantee whether you have steak, fish , Pizza (mom's favorite)you will have a great meal.
A great place to go and relax. Incredible steaks, cooked to perfection. Do not go when in a rush or have an attitude. The finest dining and location in the surrounding areas. Owner and staff were attentive and friendly, and wetre able to accomodate our every request. You would be a fool to percieve the other negative reviews as true. Wonderful place in which we will continue to return for years to come!!!
