Ralph Brennan's Jazz Kitchen
Ralph Brennan's Jazz Kitchen is more of a dining complex than a restaurant. You can choose to dine in one of the two dining rooms, the Parlor , the Courtyard or the Jazz Balcony . For wines and drinks there's a Wine Bar , separated by a French door. For a quick grub, there's Jazz Kitchen Express . Essentially French in appeal, the restaurant flaunts hand-crafted and imported furniture. It's known for the hospitality and New Orleans styled food and ambiance created by the jazz music. An extensive wine list is on offer to go with the piquant cuisine. Come here for a unique dining experience in the Downtown Disney (R) .
Very sad... This used to be our favorite place; it was always good, etc. We're local with annual Diz passes, so we'd go there about 2-3 times a month, usually for dinner, sometimes for lunch. Then about 3 years ago, they wised up to the fact that most people going there will go once in a lifetime and have no frame of reference. They started raising prices while cutting portions (Medallions of Beef went from 3 large to 2 small, for example).
Service went downhill big time. The major downhill slide that we saw was when we went for a regular visit - I had ordered my steak medium, got it raw, sent it back, got it burnt, sent it back, the next was a new burnt one but ice cold. My wife's medallions and potatoes were ice cold as well. We were told that the regular chef was off (on a Saturday evening). I cancelled my order and drank a watered down beer. We figured that this was an unusual situation, and went back a month later with similar results.
We went back a year after that with similar results. Up until last month, we'd only go to the attached coffee shop for the beignets and coffee, but found that they started using inferior coffee and a different recipe for the beignets that make them hollow and inedible (all white flour, too much baking powder, and not at all like the similar-to-Cafe du Monde recipe that they used to use). They still sell the 'real' mixes and good coffee from a shelf at highly inflated (even for disney) prices. We won't be going back.
I give it one star only because if you're lucky enough to get a balcony seat at the right time (usually not available to peons even if plenty of seats available) you can watch the fireworks while you eat. It seems that the only thing being sold here is excuses.
I would not recommend this restaurant to anybody. First, the hostest was very rude. The hostest on the second floor, rolled her eyes when we asked to possibly be seated on a different location because it was too cold. The wait staff was ok. I never had Orleans authentic food before, but I am sure it sould have tasted better than that. I don't normally leave a comment on the comment card, but had to write one this time for the hostest.
DO NOT EAT HERE. We had reservations and had to wait 45 minutes to be seated. The service was horrible. The waiter forgot our appetizer, brought us flat sodas (and admitted customers were complaining that the soda was flat all night), and our drinks were watered down and had to be sent back. Our dinners were ok. The pasta jambalaya had few shrimp and only one piece of chicken, and we also received plates cold. We ordered a dinner a la carte, and the waiter brought us the 3 course meal, and to make it worse, didn't even ask if we wanted the soup or salad with the meal we ordered. I wouldn't recommend spending your money here. It's an absolute rip off!!
For all the times I've been to New Orleans, I ate at Brennan's once for breakfast. Of course, Breakfast at Brennan's is one of those musts the guidebooks dictate.
This restaurant I thought would be a welcome respite from all the walking. We had dinner there right before hitting the park some more after the grandkids' sleep. The bill for us 4 was over $600, and this is with 2 small children! We had to send back a fish entree my wife ordered because it reeked. When it was replaced, the next fish according to her was dull tasting, as if the fish had been soaking in some solution to keep it from spoiling.
Stay away from this restaurant, they do not offer a good experience!
Took my boyfriend to dinner for his birthday. The host remembered from the reservation that it was his birthday, the waiter didn't, had to have someone remind him. Then we got a bag of donuts? as we were walking out the door. Service was average, waiter needs to speak up and get caught up on how to explain food selections. The soup sampler....ummm, all three soups were good, just a little small.
Great food, but service was terrible. I had the trout, and my wife had the pasta w/shrimp & crawfish.Dishes were amazing! Our 4 eyed waitress was too busy trying to get some play w/some fat guys from Alabama instead of serving our salad and soup that was sitting there for 10 minutes. If you get this brown haired w/glasses waitress, make sure to bring you're own water because she won't fill your glasses up for you.
I've been to New Orleans and I miss it! When I miss it too much, I come here. :D I love the Jazz Kitchen, every time we go there we have a great time and a great meal. I just made a reservation today for a week from Thursday for a friend and I to go there while we are at convention in Anaheim. I look forward to it heartily!!
I grew up in New Orleans and visited the Brennan family's restaurants regularly, this is a great representation of food, music, and atmosphere. The bold creole flavors are well done and the desserts have become much better over the past year or two. Definitely a step ahead of the other Downtown Disney restaurants and our local southern Californian corporate establishments.
