My favorite Italian place by far. This place will fill you up. They start you off with a basket of two different kinds of italian bread. They are both tasty and I love to dip them in the balsamic vinegar and oil they have on the table. I usually order one of two plates. I get the Cioppino if I am in the mood for a variety of seafood. Its a seasoned thick tomato based soup, almost a stew consistancy in a big bowl. It also has a chunk of halibut, big shrimps, clams and mussels in the shell, and a mediocre sized section of king crab. I really like to mop up as much of the sauce as I can with bread on this dish, and the only draw back is how messy this can be. I usually end up stinking like seafood because I handle the crap and shellfish too much to get them out of their shells. It costs about $21.00 and is one of the most expensive meals on the menu.
The other dish I really enjoy is the Tortellini Imperial. It comes in your choice of red or white sauce and I really enjoy either sauce. They are divine! I will order the red most of the time, and it comes with 3 different colored cheese tortellini with clams and big chunks of shrimp. This dish is a favorite of mine, my step-father and one of his sons. It runs about $19.00. I also get the minnestrone soup with all of my meals. You get your choice of soup or salad. Very good minnestrone!
As for service, I only had an issue once with them, and that was when they rushed out our main courses and didnt give our party a chance to finish our soups and salads. The waiter asked if we were done and I said no. He just sat there with our entree's in his hands waiting. Someone else came over and took my soup while I was sitting there looking at the guy like well, what are you gonna do now. I voiced my compaint to our server who wasnt the guy that brought out the entree's and he said he was sorry, that usually doesnt happen (and I know it doesnt as I have eaten here alot). They offered free soup/salads for us to take home but I declined as I wasnt looking for a free handout of any sort.
On the flip side, the people that work here in the front can be awesome sometimes too. Last time I went in, I had ordered some food to go and was waiting at the door on a chair. The guy working the register walks up to me and asks me if I want a piece of pizza while I wait. I said no and he assured me it was very good to try it. He explained it was a super thin pizza with no sauce, but had tomatoes and parmesian cheese. I said what the heck even tho I am not a big fan of tomato on pizza (yes I know tomato sauce is still tomato :p) and tried it. It was so good, it was like an italian chip! I loved it. He then informed me he eats it all the time and this one was one he bought for himself to take home. I was shocked. The guy actually offered me free a piece of his pizza he had bought with his own money while I was sitting at the door. Now that is awesome service. I really hope they keep that guy around a while, he will only do good for them!
I have been to the Peppino's in Foothill Ranch and the one that used to be near Anaheim (dunno if its still there) and the Lake Forest location is my favorite in terms of quality, service and availability.
Used to eat here but never again. The food is tolerable but the service at the Mission Viejo branch is aweful, aweful. I have to agree with one other review in which the writer asked if the good reviews were written by family members. You are better off at Olive Garden.
I am shocked by these reviews. They must be written by Peppino family members. I come from an Italian family and this is not good Italian food. I agree with one of the reviews -it beats the Olive Garden but not by much. If you grew up out here and never hand anything else, you need to know there is way better Italian food out there.
Food just doesn't taste that great. Salad tasted like it wasn't even washed. Service was slow and they just wanted to feed us and get us out.
I just started going to Peppino s Italian Family Restaurant. From my first visit of the Best Italian food I ever tasted, I was surprised at the superb flavoring. I won t eat Italian food again unless at Peppino s. By the way, I grew up with daily servings of Italian food. Peppino s is better than my home food. I liked it so much I started doing reviews. I went back two times and won t stop returning. I go to the Lake Forest location. :) I think we are so used to being told something is Italian when the real Italian comes along we don t acknowledge.
I know many people like Peppinos, It's an OC institution. Maybe if you didn't grow up around homemade Italian cooking, this is good for you. However, if you grew up in an Italian family, it's not that great and you will be disappointed.
I give it 2 stars because it is OK (and way better than Olive Garden if you have no other option). I live close by and have tried to give them a chance several times (trying to sample other items) but they always fall short.
Their red sauce is over spiced. Their veal is ok but a little thick and can be tough at times. The gnocchi are too dense. The lasagna would be better if the sauce was toned down. Their pizza is actually good but you cannot compare to back east. The Peppino bread is good and a great appetizer if you stop by the bar for a drink. Their wine prices are reasonable.
Service is hit or miss. One time you can get great service and other times you hardly see your server. The family that runs it is extremely nice. I just wish the food better tasting.
