I've been going to Matsu for 10 years now and have never had a bad experience. I'd recommend it to anyone looking for a good japanese meal along with a nice, quiet, and romantic ambiance.
Oh and the one bad review for Matsu I read above has to be a mistake. This is not a buffet style restaurant.
If you want authentic Japanese food you must try Matsu's. This is the secret gem of the O.C. The service is incredible, and atmosphere is very soothing. Whether you eat in the dinning room or at a cooking table you will have an incredible dining experience. They're always busy so call ahead for a reservation.
We have been visiting Matsu's for special occasions for almost 20 years and we have never been disappointed quite the contrary. We are not Sushi aficionados but the California & crunchy rolls along with the wonderful cooking table menu is great! I just made a reservation for my hubby's birthday this weekend. By the way the kids can go to they have a kids menu - bring your wallet though it's not cheap - but it's certainly worth the investment! Make reservations well in advance of your occassion, certainly further in advance if it falls on a Friday or Saturday!
Matsu's is by far my favotite sushi restaurant. I recently moved further away from Matsu and have been trying somewhere closer. No more!! You can't replace the friendly service or the quality of the food. I've even started doing take out when my boyfriend isn't available.
I've been dining at this restaurant for the past 20 years and I am still unable to say a bad thing about it. The food and service are both excellent. I recommend it to anyone looking for a great Japanese restaurant in the Orange/Los Angeles county area.
If you must have sushi buffet, go to Todai up the street. I know I gave Todai a mediocre review too, but it's clean and I've never been sick from Todai. I can't say the same about Matsu. I'm not calling it food poisoning, I'm just saying that I wouldn't feel comfortable on the Tea Cups at Disneyland. That said, plenty of people have given this place a good review. I acknowledge that, but I stand my ground. If you want good rolls, go up the street to the Target shopping center and hit Sushi Gesshin. If you want noodles, drive over to Brookhurst and hit Shin Sen Gumi (Near 24hr Fitness) and if you want real Japanes food, again, over to Brookhurst, hit Kappo Honda. And if you must, must have buffet style, go to Todai.
It's tucked into this mini-mall and you wouldn't think that one of the best Japanese places in HB is there, but it is. The place did an excellent job on the Japanese feel, right down to the way the women dress. Very, Very cool place, but it does come with a high price. You could easily drop 50-75+ on a dinner for two with sushi & a meal. This is an excellent place to take dates
and soccer mom's with kids, you might want to leave them at home, because kids wouldn't get it and they'd lower your experience. Great food, high prices, very cool Japanese feel.
