I used to go there all the time. The service is friendly and the food was always good. Over the years I have seen the quality go down, the portions shrink and the prices increase. The final blow was the charge on Iced Tea refills. Yes charging for refills on iced tea. that is cheap, nitpicky and a scumbag move for a place that does good business.I was a pretty regular customer there and when I complained about the iced tea refills, I was told they will do fine without my business. Indeed they will.

Matsu has a consistent level of quality. They have been the number 1 Sushi Japanese Restaurant in Huntington Beach for over 20 years. Next is most likely Tsunami Sushi in HB side of -Sunset Beach off PCH and Warner .

I tried Matsu for the first time on August 1st 2010. It was my 40th birthday and my wife and kids took me their as a surprise. WOW was I surprised. We all saw rat droppings on the floor and the place was filthy. I will never go there again!! The food was ok but I can't overlook the rat droppings.

Gem of Japanese Cuisine
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 2/14/10
I have been been going to this restaurant for over 15 years and in that time, Matsu has never deviated from being the best Japanese restaurant in all of Orange County! Hands down when it comes to customer service, ambiance, price and what matters most if you are a sushi fanatic... the freshest fish! Presentation and the ponzu sauce that accompanies the best sushi creations is why this local favorite will continue to be my favorite Japanese restaurant in Southern California. As far as price goes, I believe you get what you pay for. Which makes this gem of Japanese cuisine under priced if any thing. I'm not a wealthy individual but going to Matsu for dinner or just cocktails, I always feel I get my moneys worth. Besides how much is it worth to get consistently great food, great drinks, great service, and great ambiance? For me? Priceless.

This place is the best around...I haven't eaten anything close to it...the fish is always fresh..I would try the monk fish liver or one night stand. I have never been disappointed. The atmosphere is great and the sushi chef's are lively and full of personality. The price is norm for sushi and you pay for what you get...who wants cheap fish that is low grade? This place is well worth trying...and they have a full bar while you wait for a table.

The best sushi in town for the price. Teppan grill is great especially their fried rice. Drinks are reasonable. Sushi bar seats approximately 12 persons and is packed every night. If you don't make the 1st seating by 5:00p.m. you will have to wait until the second seating at 6:30-7:00. Be prepared to wait but worth every minute.

Matsu is pretty good. I think Sushi on Fire is better in HB, but it's a good place for a date. The prices are pretty reasonable and I have always been happy with the quality and service.
