Step inside Il Fornaio and take a culinary journey through Italy. Early mornings bring rustic, crisp crusted bread hot from the oven accompanied by the scent of fresh brewed espresso. During lunch and dinner hours, pastas and flavorful sauces simmer while meats and vegetables roast over hot coals. Bottles of wine from small, regional wineries are uncorked to complement the dishes, which have been crafted in the custom of Italy's chefs, bakers and homemakers. Il Fornaio means "the Baker" in Italian. This award-winning restaurant offers an authentic and unique Italian dining experience. Specialties include wood-fired rotisserie and grilled meats, poultry and game; house made pastas; pizzas from an oak wood burning oven; fresh salads and house made soups; a wide variety of desserts; and fresh baked bread made daily from scratch.

Our most favorite restaurant ever. The food is wonderful. You do need to dress up a little bit, or you do get the snotty service described below.

Dinner was fantastic. We made a reservation, and were seated promptly on the patio shortly after we arrived. The view of the bay and downtown San Diego was terrific. The meal was very good, and the service was prompt and courteous. At about the time dessert arrived, the bay fireworks went off. A really terrific place with an amazing view.

We ate here last week and had a wonderful dinner with great service. We were dressed casually because we had been moving all day. The pasta and fish dishes were good and the different varieties of bread are wonderful. Plan to return.

This restaurant has terrible service if you are dressed casual. We waited over 15 minutes to receive our drinks before we finally left.

Don't recommend this location.

I think a lot of the staff here are either new, or way too laid back for an upscale restaurant. Either way, the service is not good at all. This was on a Saturday night, and the place was crowded, but that's no excuse for slow, aloof service. The food was very plain. Pasta was not cooked right, the lobster was dry and the entire dish lacked flavor. Both of our meals were sub-par. We had the Conchiglie al Pollo, and the Lobster pasta. Dessert was OK On the other hand, if you don't like to talk to waiters, have no tase buds, and enjoy a really nice view, by all means check it out, the restaurant is at a fantastic location. The lack of attention from the waiter wasn't all that missed while we people-watched out the window.

My boyfriend took me to this restaurant for my Birthday. I love it - the food and the atmosphere was prefect. It was very reasonably price and the service was excellent. I am planning on going back when it's alittle warmer to sit on the patio and enjoy the view with a bottle of wine on a warm summer day.

Disappointment by the Bay

This restaurant may have a perfect bay-side location (perhaps the best in San Diego), but it doesn't make up for the disappointing food and service. All of our dinners were cold, over-cooked and lacked flavor. We had to ask for a candle or light for the table as we could not see our food. While our wait person was warm and friendly, the busboy was sour and glum. We had to track down our waiter and ask twice if we wanted anything. We won't return to or recommend this restaurant.
