El Zarape Restaurant, San Diego

Warning. Zarape is highly addicting. they have the best scallop/lobster burritos, tacos and mmmmquesadillas.

YUMMY!!! My quest for the most perfect fish taco in San Diego came to an end here. Period. (I'm so not a fan of the uber popular South Beach fish taco in OB.. btw you are not a true fish taco fan if you're eating grilled fish). Second, the scallop burrito is so delicious my mouth is watering just THINKING about it. The prices are rock bottom (99 cent fish tacos). My only complaint was the horchata a bit too sweet for my taste.

Just as a counterpoint - I am a member of the GLBT community in San Diego, and have been coming to this restaurant for years. It is one place that I recommend without hesitation. Food is fantastic, and it is the true great "hole in the wall" that makes University Heights a wonderful place to live. Try this place - you won't regret it

This place is definitely worth the wait! The food is good and at great price. It is had to get a table there so may want to do take out.

I have to concur that the attitude of the staff is rather homophobic and unfriendly AT TIMES. At other times they seem very friendly. It is very hard running a good restaurant, keeping up with sanitary needs. This place never feels really clean. And when I look back into the kitchen through the pass through (I am very tall) it looks disorganized and a little dirty... okay a lot dirty. But that does not mean it is unsanitary. I still eat here once in awhile. So I have to believe the place is okay. Darn good fish taco!

**BEWARE** The service is awful. Nasty and mean cashiers that give you attitude. Very prejudice toward gays and lesbians. They seem to have a problem serving anyone that appears gay/lesbian to them and snicker and stare behind the counter and will barely acknowledge you then wait on you with a very condescending and patronizing demeanor. SHAME ON THEM!

El Zarape above average mexican food .My better half (in many ways) and I, we went to the NEW Zarape on Adams Ave and 32nd st.We were pleasantly surprised, with a couple of good dishes . Well one good and one outstanding Fish w/crab type sauce (right on ).The imported merlot outstanding .thier margaritas are OK if you LIKE a full glass of ICE for $7.50 with a couple sipps of fluid.(NOT GOOD). Watch out for the margarita girl. They have a Meatball soup which althought is not a soup at all is very tasty good for a appetizer, minus the rice and beans. The service was excellent !!! I love the potato rolled tacos...sounds weird but they're awesome! Yes, you do usually have to wait in line but there is a reason it's always crowded...the food is so worth it. Great value too!

i don't know what the girl before me is talking about. the food here is GREAT! and the prices are good too. the food was authentic too. and if you decide to come here, you HAVE to try the lobster burritos.

We found the El Zarape Mexican Restaurant to be good - not great. The ambiance was nice enough, it was just too crowded and took forever to get our food. The food was good, but not worth the wait time we had.
