Tio Carlos, this lively and friendly Mexican restaurant has to work hard to overcome an odd location on top of an older motel and next to a busy street, but once visitors find it they come back time and again. The traditional complimentary chips and salsa are so good that you must remind yourself to save room for the entree. Combination plates are popular, such as the Shredded-Beef Taco Plate or the Chicken Enchilada Plate. A full bar is available; try a Margarita or one of the numerous brands of Mexican beer.
This is the best Mexican Restaurant in San Diego. We are from Los Angeles,CA and try to frequent this great restaurant as much as possible.
The Serive is great, Food is delicious but the Margarita's are the best....
We stumbled upon Tio Carlos while deciding where to go for dinner one night. Frustrated and really hungry, we decided the next place we saw was where we were going to eat. Thank goodness it was Tio Carlos!
The food is wonderful...the mushroom appetizer is DELICIOUS and the tacos are my absolute favorite! I take everyone here and all the food seems to be great! The service is so great too! Everyone is friendly and so helpful!
A truly great find!
We live in Phoenix and are in San Diego often when our son is home at
We keep two meals open for Tio Carlos'--one for dinner, and one
for the albondigas soup, ususally lunch.
The soup is served hot with a trayful of condiments: rice, cilantro and onion. Warm flour
or corn tortillas (we prefer the
flour) set off the soup for a perfect light lunch.
For dinner, we like anything on the menu that starts with a letter of the alphabet.
The tacos are wonderful.
We are looking for the return of the 2/5 Marines--we'll see our son come home from Iraq, and we'll at Tio Carlos'. Both will be a perfect addition to our day.
This place has the best Mexican food in San Diego. El Torito and On the Border or any of the mexican food places in Old Town cant compete. Repeat customer. Keep going back for the food. Only flaw is bad waitresses. They hire young, immature college girls. Very lousy service! But if you get the owners wife, or Louise, they are wonderful!!
The title says it all! It is a warm inviting atmosphere. I found this place by word of mouth. It has the best staff, best food and the best drinks! I highly recommend this place to all out of town visitors. Enjoy!
I have eaten there serveral times and each time the food is consistantly great. They have added lobster to their menu which is reasonable priced and tastes uniquely wonderful. You won't find a better Mexican restuarant for the price and quality of food.
I only had a chile relleno (okay) and an enchilada (good). They were a bit salty for my tastes, and I like a lot of salt. The enchilada sauce was good, however.
They put real cheese on everything, which I love.
It's odd finding parking, and one ends up either on a busy street, or in a motel parking lot which says unauthorized cars will be towed, but the sign below it says okay for Tio Carlos customers.
I got excellent service.
