Andre's Cuban Restaurant
If you are looking for Black Beans and Rice, Arroz Con Pollo or Plantains, you are in luck at this authentic Cuban eatery. For almost two decades, this informal cafe has been serving Cuban specialties for lunch and dinner, including a sensational Roast Pork Cuban Sandwich. Everything on the menu is not only incredibly delicious, but the prices are inexpensive also. Beer and wine are available.
I agree with the many bad reviews of this restaurant!! I’m Puerto Rican and this as best a bad imitation of our food. We waited almost an hour to be served, the owner is rude and so are the rest of the staff. I have a feeling this man has no idea what Puerto Rican food is really like. Their staple menus are just rice and beans and this is by no means all Puerto Rican food is all about. There are so many dishes he can serve to create variety and the service and quality of food needs to improve.
Sadly, though I desperately wanted to like this place, and tried it a good number of times, I have to say this is place is a no-go. I am Puerto Rican and had hoped for even a glimmer of that but, alas, no. What I have gotten each time is dry, bland, boring food that is nothing like Cuban or PR food. It is basically third rate cafeteria food for 10-20 bucks a plate. We just finished our last trip there (as we agreed to simply give up) and were again disappointed by the food and service. I felt like I was getting yesterday's mediocre meal from someone who could care less wether I was there or not. If you have taste buds, go somewhere else. Sad to say this, but. This place stinks.
My friends introduced me to this place a couple months ago and I loved it. We all got different dishes and shared with each other so we could taste a wide variety of foods and it was soooooo good! Love this place!
I'm Puerto Rican/Dominican and lived in San Diego from 1989-1993. I was homesick, for home cooking, and Andre's helped me get through those tough times, with the most authentic, reasonably priced, menu. Sitting back, after a hard work out, and enjoying a plate full of platanos, rice, black beans, bisteck, and flan to top it off, and then....Un cafesito negro,,,,WOW!!!
Service was poor. The food was bland. Maybe it is because I come from a family of great Puerto Rican cooks, but I though the food lacked the rich flavor I am accustomed to. I was very disappionted. Funny thing, I have friends that give this place a big thumbs up(?). I might have came on a bad day. All I can say is, I am missing garndma's food here in SD.:(
I've never been to Cuba or Puerto Rico so I can't comment on authenticity, but I can say the service is awful. I've gone back three times just to be sure it wasn't an off day. Nope. The service is awful. And the food is quite forgettable.
The food is so delicious we cannnot get enough! The also provide a great atmosphere. The banquet facilities are perfect for parties and receptions. If you like authentic Cuban and Puerto Rican food, Andres is a must!
Just like my Puerto Rican grandmothers cooking; the pork, rice, yucca, everything. On the downside they have no bar and a small selection of beer and wine. Other than that its like I am sitting at my grandmothers table on Saturday afternoon eating a huge portion of the food I have I always loved. I hear they also do take out orders, which I will get next time just so I can pair the food with a bottle of Goya Pina soda or Malta as I did so often as a child.
