Airy and bright, this strip-mall restaurant Athena Cafe manages to exude charm and a taste of the Greek islands. The restaurant offers a rich array of traditional dishes, plus some new creations. The Seafood Bisque ranks with the best. Salmon Dolmas (grape leaves stuffed with salmon) are a delightful variation on the old rice-and-tomato theme. Greek and Californian wines are available. An artful re-creation of Cycladic architecture greets visitors. On the walls are well-rendered views of Santorini by various artists. Outside, a handful of sidewalk tables encourage people watching.
Ordered from them, for pick up and the order was not ready, so after we finally got our order, went home, about 4 blocks from the restaurant and the gyro meat was ice cold and the salad had a few small flies dead in it. I thought that perhaps it was a fluke and ordered again from them a few months later and the same thing. The thing that I can't shake is the dead bugs in th esalad, and I was EATING IT!!! I will forever be grossed out by that. How hard is it to wash you lettuce. I have never made a salad at home and found a fly, so for a restaurant to have bugs in the salad on 2 diferent occassions is disgusting and unacceptable!!!!
This is a quaint little greek cafe that has delicious authenic greek food, tucked away in a garden type setting. Spacious indoor and outdoor seating that you can make with advance reservations if you prefer. It has a wide variety of items on the menu that includes the vegetarian palate. I love the decor which reminds me of the Greek Islands.
i was surprised by the ambiance...remarkably charming for a hidden strip mall restaurant in pb.
service was slow, but the server was pleasant. the wine by the glass list was decent. the food was very tasty, not out of this world, but nice. i would definitely go back and order the eggplant stuffed with walnuts, cheese and some tasty sweet tomato sauce. the rice was so-so, though.
overall, a B-.
This is our favorite resturaunt. I've never had a dish I didn't love at Athena's. The flavors are the most amazing I've ever tasted. We actually buy a quart of their Greek salad dressing to take home to make our salads at home have more flavor. The atmosphere is nice, but relaxed and casual. And the service is great...my water glass is never empty, which is saying something for how quickly I drink water. You've got to try this place. Yum!
