Red Sea

Description

As another example of the diverse cuisines available in San Diego, this Ethiopian restaurant is a real find. Colorful walls decorated with Ethiopian-themed posters, art and the down home feel of Red Sea all suggest you are in for a delightful authentic experience. For first-timers, Ethiopian food is eaten with the hands. The staple food is Injera a sponge-like bread which accompanies practically every dish. For entrees, try the Yedero Wot (a spicy chicken stewed in red pepper sauce) or any of the vegetarian dishes.

Not my first experience with African food and it was excellent. The ambience, (depending on what you feel it is) enhanced the flavor of the food and I would recommend the restaurant to anyone who loves good food and an at home feeling. The service and the people are excellent also. The restaurant is clean. I did not have to go to the bathroom. The honey wine is as good as a world class one. It was white, I did not ask that I can remember the type. It is a good value for the money. I just savored everything.

Wonderful, delicious food
By Paul, 3/2/07
If you're looking for ambiance, this place isn't going to work for you. If you're looking for a nice, casual mom & pop type place that serves delicious food with complex flavors, then you MUST give Red Sea a try. This place is really a great value too. If you like it spicy, be sure to ask for some berbere paste. The service can be a bit slow but the food is so worth the wait!

s'okay.
By Supa Dupa, 10/29/06
this place is in my top 5 of ethiopian places, only b/c i know of 5. the service is SLOW, and i find the smell of incense in the restaurant too strong. but the food is ok, and the staff is very friendly, and it keeps me going back. try Harar on el cajon blvd, best of ethiopian food i've ever had.

Great Food
By Breanne, 5/30/06
The Red Sea is a must visit San Diego restaurant. The food is great and is in the heart of the refugee community. The spicy lentils are too good to be true. Also try the Sambusa.

A wonderful surprise
By Valerie, 10/2/04
Red Sea's low-key, hole-in-the-wall appearance and low-rent location may have discouraged some folks -- their loss. Inside the service is warm and friendly (though rather slow -- don't come here if you're in a hurry), and the food is phenomenal. And the prices are in line with the neighborhood. When the check comes, you'll be pleasantly surprised for the second time.
