Fred's Mexican Cafe

Description

The beautiful people of the "just over drinking age" set have discovered this small restaurant tucked within the favorite watering hole of Moose McGillycuddy's. Mexican food can be ordered a la carte or as combinations. One of the burritos (prices vary by ingredients requested and grilled to order) is enough to fill you up for an entire afternoon. For the less adventurous, hamburgers and fries are filling, grilled to order and inexpensive. Beer and wine and margaritas are available to cool down the spicy salsa.

Ate at Fred's in Old Town last week - I was in town for the Poinsettia Bowl. Being from Louisiana, I thought we had the best Mexican Food with the Tex-Mex variety, but I was wrong! This was some of the best Mexican food I have eaten! Margarita was great. Service was friendly and fast. And the food was wonderful. Surprised to see the negative reviews, but then noticed they were 3 years ago. I guess they have changed since then because it was great food and a great time. Sorry that I could eat there only once.

Disappointing, to say the least. It looked like a fun place, but once you get in, it is actually very 'blah'. Nothing special about the food, and where was the spice? I have had spicier food in Norway. Oh, and the fajitas came with 2 small flour tortillas, we asked for more and were charged for them. Would I go back? I don't see why I would.

I give this restaurant 2 stars because I'm a generous person. My girlfriend and I ate here last weekend. We were lulled into the restaurant because a guy was playing acoustic Mexican guitar music outside. Inside was very loud American hard rock music blaring out of speakers above each table. Talk about a bait and switch. We each bought a margarita which tasted like it came from a mix. I was only able to eat half of my bowl of Tortilla Soup because it just tasted awful. Yuk.

Good food

Ate at Fred's in the Gaslamp and Old Town. Both places had good food at reasonable prices. Both had good service both indoor and outdoor seating. Try the margaritas.

A very average dining experience
By ,
My burrito was average (WAY too many black beans in the burrito), but my daughter loved here cheese enchiladas. The service was average; the ambiance nothing special. There was a loud, obnoxious drunk woman at a nearby table who kept being served; I do wonder if the staff is trained to stop serving obviously intoxicated customers. We had to wait for a while to get outdoor seating, but it was worth it, as the people-watching was the best part of the meal.

fun atmosphere, friendly service, good tacos and happy hour drinks. Laid back feeling is nice to unwind to after a long day at work. Good indoor and outdoor spaces.
