I absolutely love this restaurant. I have been coming here for over 20 years. The service and food quality always surpasses my expectations. I love sitting at the sushi bar. I hear it is one of the longest sushi bars in Southern California. It sits over 50. I order the omakase which is up to the sushi chefs. They provide all the best cuts of fishes and feed you until you say stop.
We have been coming here for years. Samurai has the best sushi as well as teppan. The service is always stellar. They have the best steamed dumplings, hand rolled salmon skin rolls, spicy tuna rolls, and overall sashimi. We love Samuari!
I actually live right down the street from Samurai so I go there a lot. This is a really good and fresh sushi place. They also have tables you can sit at where they cook the food right in front of you (Benihana style) I've never sat there (I love the raw stuff too much). I would recommend the Chef's special special (yes there are 2 specials in the title). It's a california roll with baked scallops on top with a creamy sauce on top (probably a mayo combo). It's the best! Of course it's a little pricy but that's the way most sushi places are.
Service was horrendous. I've never felt so unwanted in a restaurant before. Our waitress took our order and gave us our check. That was the extent of her service. She didn't even bother to ask us if we wanted dessert. At least the hostess refilled our water glasses. The manager didn't even bother stopping at our table. He went to every table around us except ours. We felt so rushed to get out even when the restaurant wasn't full. The food was okay. Not what I expected from a resturant with such rave reviews. The shrimp tempura was okay; average; nothing too special about it. The chicken teriyaki was salty. The sushi was extremely disapointing! The rolls were made poorly. The fish was cut unwell. The rice and fish were good though but not as exceptional as other reviewers had claimed. The presentation and creativity was boring and lacking. Portions are small. My friends and I were in and out within 30 minutes. We had came for a celebration but ended up leaving very disappointed.
The quality of the sushi at Samurai is uncomparable. They get the best selection and the most unique fish and their sushi chefs are traditional, perfectionists and incredibly creative (as well as entertaining). Samurai has been around for 25 years and ist the best.
Samurai has some of the freshest fish around. The sushi chefs are very knowledgable and are willing to take the time to prepare special requests. As a group, they are about the best I've encountered in San Diego. Makoto is particularly skilled. The prices are high, but the quality really shows.
