We have been going to this restaruant for over 12 years. The staff knows what we are going to order before we say it and they know our whole family.
Yesterday we went and ordered 3 meals. We have a party of 6 which included 3 adults, one child and 2 babies.
I noticed that the bill read $47.?? + they added $7.?? for tip. I was upset that they would take it upon themselfs to decide how much, I am going to tip. In the 12 years we have eaten there they have always left it up to me to decide how much to tip. They also do not have any sign or notice stating that this is their policy. I then paid the bill leaving only a $3.00 tip and not the $7.??. I would have gladly paid the 15% gratuity had they not taken it upon themselfs to tell me how much I was going to pay. We walked outside and as we were putting the babies in their car seats, the waiter comes out waving the bill and the cash that I had left making it a very embarrassing seen. He then tells me that I did not pay the full bill. I told him that was untrue and that I did pay the bill but I did not pay the amount of tip they wanted me to pay. I told him the tip is a gratuity from the customer to the server and that it is up to the custmoer to decide how much to tip. He stated, that this is their practice when theirs a party of 5 or more. I did not argue with him since we were running short of time and paid him an additional $4.00 tip and stated to him that i was not returning. He said that's fine and left.
I still can not believe this happend, but Iam sure I will no longer eat at Panda Country or recommend it to anyone else. Needless to say, they have lost a long time customer of 12 years that has been eating at the Santee location as well as their Clairmont Mesa. ocation.
