Beautiful location but sub par food. The steak was overcooked and the prawn appetizer lacked in-depth flavor. Dessert was original but not tasty; sauces on the dessert plate were not complimentary. The wine list was overpriced based on what was being offered. Recommended for ambience and drinks but not food.
The only thing the Marine Room has going for it these days is a beach view. Lucky for us, there are better restaurants with a beach view.
The trouble with the Marine Room is their management's arrogance and how that attitude carries through the rest of the staff. Due to mediocre recipes and chefs, the food is only worth about half of what they charge. Three major changes are needed to coax me back. Change management, upgrade the recipes and menu, and hire a new world class chef who can deliver extraordinary quality.
I don't mind paying for an expensive dinner, but for what you get it's not worth the money. The ambiance is less than average. The place is only ok but the view is pretty great. You have to dine before sunset or you won't see a thing over the water. If you get seated by the windows, bring sunglasses. We had to move from the windows because it was too hot. The service is too stuffy. I've been there several times because I'm a La Jolla local, but I won't be going back.
The only thing this restaurant has is the VIEW, really the food is not great, but good, the service is horrible. Just because the view you dont have to be treated as if they where making you a favor on serving you. And if you dont order wine or alcohol you are in for the worst service, how do they doit if, they dont like to get Gratuity or what? Probably not returning.
Really what a view can do to the fame of a Restaurant.
It is hard to decide on what is the highlight of a meal at The Marine Room. The food is excellent, the view breathtaking, and the service impecable (but not overly attentive). It is a great treat that we in San Diego are lucky to have in our own backyard.
My fiance and I went in to have dinner to check it out as a possible location for a large dinner party. Location, location, location! The view is the best in town with the Cove and the California cliffs lit up by the sunset! Since many of our guests will be East Coaster's and from out of the country (France & Japan), we thought the Marine Room would be a natural choice to spotlight the wonders of the San Diego coast and fusion cuisine. Although the sunset was beautiful, whew, it sure was hot in there! I don't think the aircon is able to go the extra mile in the humidity of summer, but the view was worth it! It did cool down after sunset. The decor, not super trendy, a little dated, perfect for a mixed ages event (my parents and grandparents will love it), but aren't you there for the view & food? What decor? The food was excellent, except the bread offering was so very average. Good bartender, cute little individual martini shaker! Although the food and beverage service was somewhat subdued? jaded? (welcome to fine dining folks!), it was very professional, and well paced, a tad bit rushed even? But definately not slow. Our service team was attentive and intuitive. In fact the back server even was quick to offer dessert in the bar at the end of our service, since I wanted to get a better view of the water (we were in a booth). I was delighted with the relocation and had a prime view of the waves lit up by spot lights in a more romantic setting. All in all, a must do experience, but leave your expectations at the door! With a view like that, they aren't exactly clamoring for customers right?! Relax and enjoy all that they do, do right!
