Showed up to the Julian Grille the day following a decent snowfall. Three of us showed up to the restaurant with a dog and the employee that greeted us was extremely helpful and outgoing to find a place for us to sit that would not disturb any other guests. I have never been to a restaurant where an employee was that friendly and outgoing. Aside from the friendliness the food was excellent. The roast beef sandwich and white bean soup I had was fantastic. My wife really enjoyed their chicken pot pie and hot cider. I definitely plan on eating here next time I visit Julian. A very pet friendly place with great food.
I'm sorry, but having just dined at the Grille I think Jazzlady's review reveals much more about her and her dining habits than it does about the Grille. I definitely would not want to be her dining companion unless it was at an all-you-can-eat buffet WITH DRINKS INCLUDED!!!
As for me I found the Grille to be quite charming and the food and service great. The menu has something for everyone. We had the baked brie as a starter It came with assorted fresh fruit and crackers--excellent. The apple and pecan vinaigrette on the house salad was a pleasant surprize. We finished with the salmon and the trout entrees. Both ample portions and delicious Try the local Menghini wines and you've got a great meal
I have to agree that the Julian Grille is a wonderful place to eat. We don't like chain restaurants either. It is sad to see the size of portions that Americans are used to eating. That explains why there are so many of my fellow Americans that are super-sized.
So, if you enjoy dining you will love the Julian Grille. If you just want to eat as much as you can, and pay as little as you can, then you will not appreciate this charming place.
My parents and I love the Julian Grille and go on every visit to Julian. However, we hate the Claim Jumper so if that is your type of restaurant then you will likely not like the Julian Grille. The atmosphere is cozy whether on a cold winter day or a nice spring day. The food is good but different, not run of the mill and you are likely NOT to get a huge portion but what you get will be excellent and not something you can find in every chain restaurant. So rather than putting a restaurant down, figure out what your type of place is first.
I don't understand Jazzlady's comments about this place. I've eaten there half a dozen time and have always had the best service and excellent meals. The meals I've had always come with a choice of soup or salad, they always offer you a side dish, and if you run out of bread they're more than happy to bring you more.
The meals didn't come with drinks or dessert, but what restaurant does that?
Don't be afraid to speak up Jazzlady, if your meal doesn't come with a side don't order it.
I'll be back again and again.
