Went for lunch on 8/17 . First time for me and my friend. We were born and raised in Hawaii and know local food. I guess we went on the wrong day. I'm going to take my wife today and try again. This was the situartion yesterday. The saimin noodles was way overcooked almost like chicken noodle soup and my kalbi was all fat. What really makes a plate lunch though is the mac salad. This mac salad had no taste and to much carrots and no egg mixed in the anchor the salad and for taste. I'm not one to complain but when it comes to local kine food I gotta make some noise. Oh! the kalua pig, to greasy. I have heard a lot of good things about Kealani's and plan on coming back often, We've been to all the local food places in San Diego and L.A. Only a hand full gets close to the local flavor. Can someone tell this old Hawaiian bla la why the so called Hawaiian Style Restaurants cannot get it right? Maybe the cooks gotta put some ALOHA in the preparations. Just because you have the right words on the menu and pictures on the wall does'nt make it Hawaiian. Where is the home style Hawaiian Luau kine grinds that comes with so much aloha that it overwhelms the patrons? Do us misplaced Hawaiians gotta go back home for a taste of Aloha? Maybe so. If anyone reads this and goes to Hawaii please eat at Palace Saimin on Kings St. in kalihi, Ono Hawaiian Food on Kapahulu near Waikiki. In fact to any hole in the wall mom and pops place they will serve you with aloha and taste. Well I'm on my way back and going to try the pipi kaula and lomi salmon. Like I said maybe a bad day for the cooks.
LOVE KEALANIS!!! It's the best island food in SD by far! They don't try and rip you off by filling the kahlua pig with cabbage...good healthy portions like back in the islands, authentic plate lunches, good shave ice, and now it's bigger with more seating. My only complaint is that they're not open on Sundays! All of my family visiting from the islands couldn't believe it was food from a local restaurant and not shipped in from home. Oh, poi and lau lau special on Saturdays is the best! Major onolicious!
Ahi poke...broke da' mouth!
