Had been looking soo forward to trying this nice-looking place. The Gnocchi was terrible. The rest of our meal was good.
We got gnocchi because it was one of the Featured dishes of this evening (On the special menu) and always a family favorite. It was in a good parmesan sauce with fresh herbs but... The dumplings themselves did not taste like potato dumplings (no potato flavor?), just like regular semolina or 50/50 pasta and were like big cubes of tasteless chewing gum. Just awful.
Sorry. They charge plenty and that dish was unacceptable. I wrote a note on my credit card slip.
Wife s pasta was with goat cheese, pesto, etc and quite good.
We had an appetizer with raw filet minion that was fabulous. Next, amazing spinach salads with duck. Then, fettuccini primavera and the halibut special. We had desert because dinner was so great. The seating was very close; I had to pull all the way up to the table so the waiter could get to the table next to me. The food was fabulous but the restaurant was tighter than I had ever seen. There was less than a foot behind me to the next table.
The prices are reasonable for the good food quality.
The Food is very good
No reservations accepted
They need a shoe-horn to squeeze you in because the tables are arranged so close together (Seem's like the Fire Dept would reduce the number of tables)
Extremely noisy because there are so many people packed into such a small space.
We won't be back for awhile because there are so many other options for Italian food where the atmosphere is better. It does seem like the owner is a little greedy by putting so many tables in the space. If about 25% of the tables were removed this would be an awesome restaurant!
I love Italian food; once owned an Italian restaurant on the central coast, and I can't say that I've found anywhere that compares to this wonderful place. We took a friend who is Italian here and he and his wife proclaimed the gnocchi the best they've ever tasted at a restaurant. Great people, great food and the tiny place and tight tables are just one more way to feel you've landed in the local favorite place in an Italian village.
Let me first state that I LOVE Italian food. I will try ANY Italian restaurant just to make sure if it's good or not. I am so thankful for the birthday party I went to that introduced me to Trattoria i Trulli. From the time we sat down and our Italian waiter greeted us with the spirit you would expect in Italy, to the last bite of tiramisou that melted in my mouth, everything was perfect. Ever since then, I have made it a point to take everyone that will come with me.
They don't take reservations, so if you are the impatient, crabby type of person that complains about waiting for a table, and will let that ruin every last detail of the rest of your evening, don't go. Don't go in and ruin the hostesses, servers, and other employee's night just because you are so high maintainence and feel you deserve better service than everyone else. This is not the type of place you would even want to hurry though dinner. Even the wait outside is quaint, right on one of the coolest roads in San Diego. Just go out and enjoy the experience. Sorry...did I just rant a bit?
Anyway, the food is oustanding, the wine list is excellent, and the ambiance is very authentic to a cafe right in Italy. So, if you'd like to escape to Italy for an evening, please, go try Trattoria i Trulli.
As others have stated, the best of many Italian restaurants in Encinitas. Delicious authentic food and good service yet reasonably priced. Not a bad selection on the menu. May not be a good choice if you are looking for a quiet, intimate dining experience, as the restaurant is small and often packed, therefore noisy. If this is not a concern and you are craving Italian cuisine in Encinitas, this is your place.
Outside the restaurant appears to be classy. As we entered, on a slow night of the week, we were met by noone for 2-3 minutes. We were seated, our waiter dropped off a wine list and we didn't see them again for about 10-15 minutes. Waiting seemed to be the norm for the evening as a single waiter ran around to about 8 tables with help. We waited to order a meal, no oportunity for more wine, we even waited for the bill. Dinner arrived, but my wife received salmon instead of chicken. She decided to keep her meal, which she barely touched, rather than wait for a new order. The waiter made no sort of adjustment for the mistake as I would have expected. We paid the bill, and walked out of the place without a service person in site. I strongly believe in making up for mistakes, they didn't, so I won't be back.
What's better than sitting outside in early January dining on great Italian food? Not much! i Trulli has the best Sausage (Salcicce SP?) on Polent with Gorgonzolla!
The wine list is also amazing. Makes most other Italian restaurants seem fake and trite. A bit noisy inside but that adds to the experience with a large group of friends and family. Great place for a date so sit at an outside table so you can talk.
Worth the money and the occasional wait. Fair prices and HIGHLY recommended!
