I am a man of many hats but I did not know there was more than one Sombrero until I met with Aracely Gonzalez.
This place first opened in 1968 on Montezuma and El Cajon Boulevard, and opened in South Park in 1984. Gonzalez purchased the Sombrero Mexican Food restaurant in South Park from her parents in 2010 and began reinvesting in the interior and the presentation of fare. It confused the locals a bit, “Where are the old folks? Please don’t change anything on the menu.” They all said. She didn’t the family recipes are intact and the store got a clean makeover. The “Abueltias” are there too. Painted for posterity in the main mural on the shops interior walls.
Her brother took over the name and suddenly there are18 Sombrero’s stretching as far as Yuma Arizona. All owned and operated by family or former employees. It’s a San Diego home grown franchise with out a gimmick. And it’s looking stronger everyday. It leads me to ask, what recession?
Sombrero's menu consists of all of the Mexican favorites: Burritos, Tacos, Tortas, Enchiladas, Tostadas, and much more. They have created the healthy Mexican Bowl. A low cost, quick, and healthy, contained meal to go, think of a tostada in a container. All Sombrero Mexican Food locations open early and close late, and serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner and include some 24-hour drive-thru locations.
Besides the homemade nature and taste of the food. Catering and fundraising differentiate from the “Erto’s” that dot the landscape. For NPO’s and charitable organizations Sombrero will run coupons that deliver 20% of the take to your concern.
That’s the franchise; I am more concerned with only the authentic and original article located in South Park. It has kept its community flavor and family taste. That is 5 stars for me, with or with out the brilliant smile of Aracely.
