Al's In-the-Village Cafe is an ultra-popular diner in Carlsbad Village. Inside, one long counter, with vinyl-covered stools, bears the resemblance of a traditional American diner. Guests also have the option to sit outside, with a few umbrella-topped tables set along the street corner. Yet, be forewarned that traffic is busy and the noise level is significant. For breakfast, try one of Al's Omelets. Or choose from Strawberry, Macadamia Nut and Banana-Pecan Waffles. Traditional lunch specials include Meat Loaf and Mashed Potatoes, Liver and Onions.

5 reviews for Al's Cafe in the Village
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 08/19/09
Al's cafe in the village was closed for 5 days last week for bug & vermin infestation I returned to see what was wrong because the owner put a sign up saying there was a plumbing problem I saw three different cockroaches one in a cream bowl one running across the floor by the kitchen and one in the bathroom maybe the plumbing problem was that they could not flush the bugs and vermin down the toilet. When asked the owner Al Wannamaker said there was a plumbind problem an obvios lie to cover up the infestation of vermin and bugs maybe he should train the Rats to eat the bugs or maybe he is the rat !!!! NO THANKS I would rather eat at a T.J taco stand on the street probably a better bet of not getting a bug in your food -10 rating !!!!

The setting is casual, service friendly and the food is very good. I had the Mushroom, Spinach & Feta omelet. Very fresh! The wheat toast was thick and crispy. The coffee is excellent.

My parents visited Al's on a regular basis. I took them to the Aviara, Anderson's and Pelly's etc. They loved the patty melt at Al's. Al's would graciously split the order and add extra fruit. My parents were wealthy professionals but also experienced the great depression. When my fathers Cadillac found itself engaged to a wall in the handicapped parking area the owner (Al?) jacked it up and removed it. My mother had Alzheimer's in the final years; my father felt at home in Al's. Not just a diner or good food - A member of the family.

A local's favorite place to eat for breakfast and the food is fantastic there! Try the "Easy Bennie" for $5.95 which is Eggs Benedict and comes with your choice of grilled red potatoes or traditional hash browns. The coffee is wonderful too!! What's breakfast without coffee or tea? Best to go during weekdays (get there before 2:00 p.m.) as they are always swamped on weekends (makes sense since they serve breakfast all day until they close!) so the service may not be fast, but the food will be good. If you're in a hurry, go to Denny's or a fast food place because it will take longer when it's crowded. Certainly one of my favorite places for breakfast!

DON'T GO THERE EVEN IF YOU ARE STARVING
By ASC, 07/03/06
Please keep away. We went there today because we had read a good review in the one of San Diego Dining Guide's written by the publicist himself. They must have paid him handsomely, but no self resecting man should have printed that. It was at least 15 mins before the waitress noticed us. Then we waited another 50 mins for our food to come ... and we had our 11 month old daughter with us. The poor girl was bored to death! As our orders were really simple, fish & chips and funky chicken sandwich, we don't know what took so long. The food was not even mediocre, my chicken sandwich was really tasteless, no seasoning, no ketchup, no mayo, no lettuce ... maybe half a slice of cheese and at most 8 tiny pieces of mushrooms. My husband's fish looked like greased rubber. No A/C either, so it was uncomfortably hot in the dining room. I had to wash my hands in the restroom and it was DISGUSTING!! To top all this lovely experience we also got charged for the fries that should have been included with the sandwich. Really terrible experience :( I would have given negative rating if yahoo allowed me to do so.
