Blaze causes $1 million in damage at restaurant A fire gutted a popular Carlsbad eatery yesterday, causing an estimated $1 million in damage and snarling commuter traffic on Interstate 5 for two hours.
Firefighters worked to put out the blaze at the Sammy's Woodfired Pizza on Avenida Encinas near Palomar Airport Road.
Two workers were preparing lunch in Sammy's Woodfired Pizza on Avenida Encinas near Palomar Airport Road and another worker had arrived when an explosion rocked the building just before 8 a.m., said Carlsbad Fire Marshal James Weigand.
The restaurant wasn't open, and the workers escaped unharmed.
A police officer reported the fire at 7:56 a.m. and firefighters arrived within five minutes and sent out a second alarm at 8:01 a.m. Firefighters from Carlsbad, Encinitas and Vista fought the blaze, Weigand said.
Officials with the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco Firearms, and Explosives were inspecting the wreckage and will help investigate, Weigand said.
He said the fire started in the back of the restaurant where the kitchen, electrical panels and gas lines are located. He said the roof and interior of the restaurant were destroyed and only the exterior walls remained.–D.B.& A.M.
