In 1986 I was invited by my sister to Utage Restaurant for the first time and It was also my first time experience in Japanese cuisine, I can tell that I was captivated and addicted since then with the flavors and textures of the sushi, sashimi and Japanese cooked dishes. Basically I learn to enjoy Japanese food at Utage having a dinner with my wife (ex-wife now) two or three times a week. We used to live close to the restaurant (Nantucket Dr.) and It was very convenient, but mainly because the constant and permanent quality and freshness of their meals.
Since then I had been in many, many sushi bars in California, Oregon, Arizona, Texas, Georgia, New York, and everywhere I go, and with my hand in my hart can tell that always return to Utage restaurant having in my mind (and my mouth) the conviction that Utage is one of the best Japanese restaurants that I had ever visited.
If you think I am exaggerating ask to the many Japanese business men from Otay Mesa or any maquiladora across the border that frequently have a dinner there, so ... Utage is a real Japanese cuisine not like the one you may find in some places of Mexico which is a sushi-taco-Mexican food or like some sushi bars across the United States which lacks of freshness and quality of their product, or absence of commitment from their Chefs in the ART of making sushi.
Some times the service could be a little slow but you may find it is because they are crowded, but no problem ... you can easily fix it being more insistent with the waitress or winking at her (If you are allowed by your companion).
In the alcohol area I suggest to have a warm or cold sake (rice wine), warm or cold depends on your preferences or a chilling Sapporo beer.
Sooooo Take out your fiance, wife, lover or just a friend and enjoy a nice evening in the Chula Vista area with the delights of the Japanese Cuisine, but be aware of what may happen after having a lot of IKURA, TORO, MAGURO, SABA, AOYAGI, HAMASHI but especially many, many UNI with a quail egg.
Ladies encourage your man to eat UNI as many as they can, you will enjoy the benefits of doing so. Cheers.
This is one of my two favorite Japanese restaurants/sushi bars in all of Southern California, and I've eaten at quite a few. The ambiance is authentic without being pretensious, as are the sushi chefs and other staff. The food is excellent and reasonably priced. And best of all, it's right here close to home! (My other favorite is Moreno Valley, of all places, so I don't get there very often.) I recommend Utage to anyone who savors Japanese cuisine, and especially for sushi & sashimi enthusiasts.
This is my absolute favorite place to eat! My brother and I go there every Friday after payroll. We often invite some of the guys from work also, but mostly we like to dine with our families. This is our quiet time to sit and enjoy the best sushi and sashimi ever! My brother loves the fried shrimp heads...mmm...pretty tasty. I come to Utage during the week too and pretend to get my feelings hurt when my brother tells me he went without me during the week (I have yet to tell him I go without him). I have gone to several other sushi restaurants, but always come back to Utage. This is where I feel most comfortable and where I can honestly say the food is fresh and tasty, the ambiance is cozy, and the people are the friendliest.
I'm getting to like this restaurant. I like the ambiance...the food is excellent and the price is affordable. I've been to other japanese restaurants but this is the best so far. I will be back there again soon.
