I have eaten in many dim sum restaurants and this one stands out with great food and friendly environment. Service is just as good if you know how to get there attention. Just waive your hands up when you see waiter for orders or waive at the push cart server and they are happy to serve you. This is a great down to earth dim sum with no frills. Unless you want a ocean front view restaurant and paid over the top for there overhead and subpar food.
All this talk of bad service must have been an anomaly. I was there with a Chinese business colleague during the week. The service was fantastic and friendly. The staff went out of their way to tell me what I was eating. I have eaten dim sum in many places and this was very good! Go there.
I take my 2 girls to Ocean Star all the time. Although you will be there for at the least an hour. The food is good we have never had problems there. Everyone is always nice and courteous especially the women taking the carts around. The waiters that we have had have also been very nice, busy but nice none the less.
I a very poor rating due to service! I don't know if I had bad service due to me not being Chinese but based on the reviews I think it's across the board. When I first came in and was brought tea, the white tea container was spotted with tea leaves and was obviously dirty. I actually wanted to leave right then, but the place was pretty crowded around 10:30 a.m. so I thought I would still give it a try. The cart girls were very nice. I did NOT have any customer service issues with the cart girls...BUT the MALE waiters,, ALL OF THE MALE WAITERS are very rude. In the end, I asked for to go containers and one of the male waiters kept on saying ok you pay me now, you pay me now $15 you pay me now VERY VERY RUDELY and he rolled his eyes, as I was packing things in my hand. I asked him can I pack my food first. He said because we are busy, you pay me now. I will never come back ever again do to the service!!!!!! The food wasn't too bad, but not great!!! All of the individual portion size were way too small leaving the texture of the food mostly of rice wrappings. The only positive I would say is the price. I think many people come back because the price is very reasonable but I would never compromise price for service!! Or lack of....
The service is terrible. The waiters and employees are not courteous, nice, friendly, or professional at all. The food is decent but quickly becomes worse just from how awful the service is. Clearly, customer service training is needed for all employees working there. Please do not visit, then perhaps they may start treating customers with some respect to earn business back. There is no excuse for such crummy service!
From 11 am to 1 pm you will definitely have to wait. The food is very good, but the service stinks during the Dim Sum hours. While they serve Dim Sum it is almost impossible to get good service if you want something other than what is being pushed around in the carts (Ie, a glass of water/soda, soy sauce, chili). If service is of the utmost importance to you, don't come here (especially if you're White). You will be very frustrated. If you think you can deal with the subpar service, then I definitely recommend coming here to enjoy the food (and the food only). The decor is nice and feels like one of the more classier Chinese restaurants in the area, but don't expect it to be quiet. The tables are set in a grand lobby-like room without any room dividers so eating here will seem like you are sitting in the middle of Chinatown- noisy & busy. Again, food here is terrific, but the service will not please everybody.
Ocean Star is I think a high class Chinese Restaurant, and also I think one of the biggest Chinese Restaurants. I went there twice, once for dim sum lunch, and once for dinner. It was good, the chow mein, the dim sum. For dinner the restaurant mostly the restaurant only uses one part of the restaurant, but for dim sum lunch, they mostly use the whole restaurant.
The Dim Sum is probably the best in the Los Angeles area. Well worth the trek out to Monterey Park and deal with the traffic, long wait for a table and parking mess.
You NEVER go to eat Dim Sum and expect great service. Dim Sum is always an adventure. Massive numbers of people, speedy table turnover. But you go for the food and the Dim Sum here is like no other!
Go and explore!
