CHO CHO SAN
I have been there quite a few times over many years.
THe prices for Sushi are below average., so is the quality of their fish....BELOW AVERAGE.
The seaweed for the hand rolls is soft and chewy...Not grade A quality.
There is nothing more unappetizing, than eating at the Sushi Bar and smelling Clorox or Bleach, as they are moping the floors, while patrons are eating.
There are many more Excellent Quality Sushi Restuarants in the Westlake, Thousand Oaks area.
I eat sushi A LOT, and I still think Cho Cho San is my all time favorite restaurant. I moved to the east coast for 10 years and deparately asked sushi chefs to try and mimic my favorite rolls from Cho Cho San, never to my complete satisfaction mind you. So I moved back here to the west coast JUST for my favorite sushi! My kids LOVE sushi because I weaned them onto Cho Cho San's delicious rolls. Their favorite is the Double Double shrimp salad inside, shrimp outside drizzled with sweet sauce and chili sauce yummmm now I am getting hungry. Now my kids 11 and 9 are amazing adventurous sushi eaters and will eat my favorite the Tuna Rice Crispy. An ice cream scoop of Chopped spicy/or not, tuna piled high on a fried rice cake, to die for!!! I was thrilled to find 2 more cho cho San owned restaurants in Valencia, Kisho, and California Sushi in Santa Clarita, All four Cho Cho Sans are THE BEST
Been my familys favorite restaurant for birthdays & anniversaries ever since we moved here almost 15 years ago!
We love it.
Cho Cho San's service can be slow on busy days & the staff isnt the friendliest all the time but the food is GOOD.
Sushi is good too.
I would and do go there lots.
Cho Cho San is an excellent teppan and sushi bar restaurant. Very nicely decorated with some japanese items such as a samurai suit and various other pieces give it a nice flair while cool gray colors give the place a calming feel.
The prices are fairly reasonable as $20 is enough to get full off of. They seem to specialize in rolls, many of which have some manner of a fried item in them. Hence, if you're a traditionalist when it comes to sushi this place just might be a disappointment. However, the rolls are large and very tasty. The highlight of my evening was a spicy tuna rice krispy, which is spicy tuna served on top of a fried bar of rice; the texture was nice as was the flavor contrast of the cold spicy tuna with the hot fried rice patty. The biggest disappointment for me was the sashimi combination, the fish was tasty and good quality, but all it was was eight or so pieces of fish, and only had salmon, yellowtail, and tuna. Again, it tasted good, but it was not what I expected.
While sushi was the main focus for me, I was sitting at the teppan table, so I did get to watch an enjoyable performance and try some of the items served. First, the meal comes with soup and salad of which I only tried the salad. The salad was alright, I've had more interesting salads at sushi bars; this was simply iceberg lettuce with a tomato in a dressing that wasn't quite a thousand island, but was very similar. The chef was not very enthusiastic, but he did have enough flair to keep us entertained and the food was delicious. I was impressed with the shrimp mostly by the fact that it was good quality shrimp. It was well sauced and seasoned, which seems to be a bit of a trick at teppan restaurants.
Since it was my birthday I suppose I should mention how you'll be treated if you want to experience the birthday festivities. They dress guys up with a samurai robe, sword, and rubber hair piece, and women they dress like geishas, then they sing and take a picture. For desert you get strawberry and vanilla ice cream, it's nothing all that special, but it was nice.
