Our favorite! You MUST try the Pecan Chicken Salad when it is on the specials menu. This is FABULOUS! Very filling and very delicious. My husband loves the calzones and the wood fired pizza. Excellent service always.
If you want to waste money and go home hungry, then try Star Cafe. I ordered the the pork tenderloin, my nephew, the chicken marsala and it was served with child-like portions for adult prices. A friend ordered the calzone, which was descent, but he agrees with us and would not go back. The service was aceptable, the food was not.
went there for mother's day, may 2009, and i had some of the worst pasta i have ever eaten in my life. the service was good but the food was over price and terrible. i had the 1/2 seafood pasta and ceasar salad. the sauce was just too thick and over salted. it got to a point where i just couldn't eat it. and the tiny weenie little scallops was a joke. my wife had the ravioli, no salad. for 4 pieces of ravioli, it was like $3.50 per ravioli!! give me a break, what is in these little dumplings (a little bit of chicken, cheese, mushroom) you see where i'm going with this. one of my kids had chicken quesidillas and a salad (a little bit of chicken, some cheese, lettuce). my other kid had some paste with red sauce, no meat, and a salad. for maybe $4 worth of ingredients, lunch for 4 was over $50 and over $60 with tip. for that price i could have gone to chinatown for a feast plus a full meal for the next day. the thing that made it worst was that a few years back the family did go there for a nice meal, as far as i could remember, i thought we were going to have another nice time. so 2 stars for the nice service and zero for the food
Both the Black Cow Cafe and the Star Cafe are owned by the same people so it's not surprising that they're both next door to each other. Star Cafe is the restaurant you go to when there's a long line at Black Cow. Breakfast at the Star is decent. It serves great omeletes but that's about it.
The service leaves much to be desired. You can be sitting there for 15 minutes with a closed menu waiting for somebody to take your order. I've left twice and eat elsewhere.
Another of the great places to eat in Montrose. I have tried almost everything on their menu (which is always being updated with new flavors), but my recent favorite is the salmon pesto sandwich. Yeah, it's that's good. Service can be slow during busy times, but where is it not? Prices are more than reasonable and the portions are very good - and you will not walk away hungry. Plenty of parking in the back area on the northside of Honolulu Ave. Great for place for couples and family or meeting up with friends. You won't be disappointed.
What a terrible manager!
I visit Montrose once a month for my dermatologist appointment. I do not live in this area. I went to Star Café because there was a deal on restaurant.com.
When we walk in, there was no one to greet us. A waiter tells us to sit wherever we want. We ordered our food. They give you a bread roll. No flavor. Not even butter or oil to flavor it with. My husband ordered the Lasagna, I got the Shrimp & Scallop pesto linguine. The food was mediocre at best.
The service was mediocre as well. Although our waitress seemed very friendly, it took a long time for us to grab her attention to get our check.
This is where it gets really bad...I give the waitress my voucher from restaurant.com. She comes back and says because the pictures didn’t print out, it’s not valid. The voucher clearly stated the voucher number, the amount, and a customer service number to call. I even had my personal email printed out showing that I paid for it. So what if the stupid GIF pictures did not print. So what if the “Terms & Conditions” are not on there. When I paid for it, I agreed to the “Terms & Conditions”. Printing them does not make a difference. So then the manager comes over and tries to tell me that what I had was not good enough. That the restaurant is having problems with the restaurant.com vouchers getting validated. This is where I lost it! How dare he as a manager argue with his customer. If he is having problems with restaurant.com, that is not my problem. And to top it off it was only for $10.00. Really? You want to argue with a customer for $10.00? So then when I demanded my check with the discount on it, he started to laugh!! OMG! How dare he laugh at his customer! He should be frickin’ grateful he has any customers at all! The economy is bad, and he wants to demean his customer for $10.00!! So I tell him, “Why are you laughing at me? Do you think this is funny?” And he says, “I’m laughing because you will not let me talk and are causing a commotion!” Really? This is how you treat a customer? Scolding me like a child? I again demanded my check with the discount, and he finally came back for it. He should have just honored the voucher in the first place. He did not have to come and argue with me about stupid Gif pictures.
The manager definitely needs to reprimanded, if not fired. Clearly, he has no customer service skills. It was a terrible experience dining at Star Café. I will let everyone I know what a terrible experience it was. There are at least 20 other restaurants on the same street that are far better in food and service. Please stay away from here!
