On the First Thursday evening each month, spend the evening in downtown San Pedro poking through the shops, visiting artists' galleries and running into old friends. Activities include: stores open late, street vendors and artisans, excellent food offerings from all the area restaurants most of which (including the Whale & Ale), offer free live music every First Thursday. The art galleries of Downtown San Pedro present several showcases, featuring some of the brightest young artists as well as some of the most respected masters. Merchants and vendors are open late offering unique gift ideas for that special someone.
We were wondering around looking for a good lunch when this establishment caught our eye. It has a fabulous, inviting visage and the food was extremely good. The burgers made from Kobe beef blew my boys away. We shared a cup of the clam chowder which was good but had bacon (?) in it which is never my preference. The interior ambiance is cozy and it took a while for the food to appear, but personally I have no complaint if food is mindfully prepared and tastes accordingly. We were all in agreement that whenever we are in the area or passing through, we will return!
My favorite haunt (especially on Friday nights) when living in San Pedro (L.A. Harbor) from 2007-2011 was the Whale & Ale British Pub & Restaurant. I still make a point of dropping in there regularly when I visit L.A. on leave. Great food (Recommended main courses: fish & chips, curry chicken, Angus beef burgers. Favorite appetizers: Welsh rarebit, Tandoori lamb chops), great atmosphere (owned by a genuine Londoner, Andrew Silber, and staffed by hard-working and friendly servers including the lovely & talented Shannon, Katina, Linda, and Beth), great old-school British decor, and great company (a friendly bunch of regulars among the clientele, not to mention the excellent live entertainment of pianist Rob Klopfenstein, and the Sea Shanty singing group on the last Friday of the month). There s a reason I ve chosen it as for my last six birthday and going-away parties. To quote Sgt. Pepper s Lonely Hearts Club Band, A splendid time is guaranteed for all.
We ended up at The Whale & Ale by mistake, but we so enjoyed the food, drinks (awesome Manhattans’) great pear ale and apple cider. I ordered the Fish (Salmon) & Chips, and it was delicious. My husband ordered the steak and kidney pie and he enjoyed it tremendously. We sat towards the back and it was a bit darker than I would have liked, but it was romantic lighting. Apparently there is an upstairs, but we did not venture up the stairs. All in all the service was spectacular and we had a great meal at a reasonable price in a great atmosphere. We will be back to enjoy another meal.
My family has been dining at The Whale & Ale for years. It s a great place to visit if you like excellent food and a cozy atmosphere with a British vibe. You ll find it the perfect spot to go if you want to relax at the end of your work week and it s just right for an intimate date. Owner Andrew and his staff always make us and everyone there feel welcome.
