Captain Jack's Prime Rib
This is one of the famous restaurants on Sunset Beach. It serves only seafood, and the grilled mahi-mahi is quite popular with surfers on the beach. The Crab Legs are scrumptious. The name comes from the owner, Jack Haley, a former surfing champion.
My first experience with Captain Jack s was over a year ago, although food was good, customer service was bad. Bathroom smelled bad and toilet did not work. Went in last night with some friends and after a year, same smell in bathroom and toilet once again did not work! Went into bar area to wait for our table and was told hubby can t wear a tanktop, but they proceeded to serve him a drink anyways...after 20 mins of sitting in their lounge, hubby was told he had to put something on, so I purchased a tshirt for him. After about another 15 mins of waiting for our table and listening to their lounge singer, we were approached by a bartender and asked to leave....gave no excuse but said we had to leave...other patrons as well as their lounge singer were surprised on how we were being treated. Needless to say, it got loud and words were exchanged, we were told by this host that my husband threatened him and they had to kick him out a few weeks ago.....I asked him to tell me when and he could not....We are not from that local area and do not go there frequently. Have only been there 1 other time. I have never had an experience like this before, will never go back to this place and I hope they find who this person they have mistaken my husband for, because their treatment of us was something that I will not soon forget nor will I let my friends, family, our personal customers whom we have recommended this place to, but will never again! It was the most humiliating public experience I have ever been through! Ended our night at Kings Fish House in Orange (www.kingsfishhouse.com) and were treated with respect and had great customer service and enjoyed a nice dinner! Bathrooms were clean too!
Service is getting worse over the past couple of years. Manager does absolutely nothing to help his servers and bussers dealing with loud, obnoxious parties. I only see one server worth his weight. All others sit back in the kitchen area and chat up a storm. Tim needs to come back and manage this place or get out of the business. Heard some guests were sprayed with window cleaner while dining a couple weeks ago as the manager apparently decided to have the staff clean windows while guests were dining. Couldn t believe it. What was such a fine establishment has gone down the tubes and lost this customer for sure.
Took my fiancee there for her Birthday. It was the best dinner we have both ever had. They have 2 house specialities, one is the Crab legs, the other is the Prime Rib. The Prime Rib, which is the house specialty we chose was the most tender, flavorful and delicious either one of us has ever had. The salad was large and fresh, and the rice had a tremendous flavor. I manage a Steakhouse in Arizona, and this was Amazing. The home made Au jus and Creamy Horseradish just accented the meal even more.
What made all of this a great experiance, was the awesome teamwork and friendly professionalism of the staff. It was straight out of the 60's era, the type of thing you see in movies of that era, where they call your name throughout the dining room as you get seated, and sing your name and personalize it in a birthday song. (while we dined there were at least 4-5 anniversaries they did the same too).
If you get just one chance to try this wonderful dining establishment, take it and enjoy every minute like we did.
My only advice, is that the portions of the 2 House Specialities are enough for 2-3 people. They offered to split it for us, and it was perfect.
We look forward to telling our friends and family that frequent califorina or live here to indulge themselves in this classic, outstanding esatbalishment. Captian Jacks, we will never forget you. We will be back, as soon as possible.

Captain Jack's is located in a quaint little beach town called Sunset Beach on Pacific Coast Highway between Long Beach & Huntington Beach. The restaurant decor is very nautical and showcases some beautiful salt water fish tanks. The entrance and bar area are very dark, but once you get into the dining room the sunlight brightens it up. If you get a table near the windows, you can watch people puttering around in their commuter boats or paddle-boarding in the canal.
Although Captain Jack's is well-known for their King Crab Legs, their Prime Rib is the star. All entrees include a dinner salad (Ranch & Bleu Cheese dressings were great), rice, and The Captain's Famous Hot Pumpernickel & Sourdough Bread. The initial bread slices are personally presented by your server giving it a touch of class. The gigantic center cut Prime Rib is a whopping 28 ounces which is cooked medium to medium rare. It is the juiciest and most tender prime rib you'll ever come across. You could cut it with a butter knife - that says it all. It comes with au jus & creamed horseradish or straight horseradish if you prefer.
Can't forget about the King Crab Legs! The legs are pre-scored so very little cracking is necessary. The meat was sweet and juicy just the way it supposed to be. It comes with drawn butter to make it even sweeter. Be prepared to take a doggie bag home. Leftovers are great warmed up the next day.
After all that, who has room for dessert? Well, make room. The Chocolate Amaretto Mousse Pie was incredible. Imagine a Chocolate Silk Pie with a shot of Amaretto to punch it up a notch - out of this world!
If you happen to be near Sunset Beach or just want a food adventure, head on over to Captain Jack's and let the Captain take care of you.
I was introduced to Captain Jacks in the 70s and fell in love - with the crab that is!!! Actually, I had many romantic evenings at this restaurant. I have introduced friends to this establishment, and they have introduced their friends. I love this place, and after I moved from California to Florida for 26 years, I would always make a point to dine at Captain Jacks when I visited. I'm living in California again, and it's great to dine there again. Tonight I'm having a great salad, king crab legs, a fine wine and perhaps, hors d'oeuvres to start.
As far as Steaks go, it's one of the best I ever ate and that's coming from a carnivore. And, did anyone say something like they have Crab legs. Yeah, they are to die for. I'm asian and prefer the asian style crab and lobster over the american plane butter dipping but these crab legs are in a class of it's own.
I love Captain Jacks. It's old school and has super nice waiters. We need more authentic old school restaurants. Hostesses are lame, not very accomodating when it comes to seating. Expect to wait unless you have a reservation and god forbid don't change the number of people in your reservation. They will threaten you with a long wait. The crab legs are dynamite!
