Aunt Kizzy's Backporch

Description

Although the ambiance is as casual as it can get, sightings of movie stars and athletes are common at this down-home cookery in the Marina. Like the rest of the locals, they know that Aunt Kizzy cooks up the finest fried chicken, cornbread and meatloaf around. The portions are huge and the prices are slim, so bring your appetite and forget the diet. When you want it Southern, it's either here or a plane ride to Memphis.

That Sunday Brunch Is Like Momma Use To Make!
By Truth, 8/21/05
Aunt Kizzy's is as close as a restaurant can get to the home cookin' of what my Grandma Gussy use to make...Delicious! When I lived in LA this was a spot I would frequent on Sunday after church to get some of that Sunday Brunch...it was like when I was a kid sittin' at Grandma Gussy's table where the food was not ALL you can eat but MORE than you could eat...but it didn't stop me from tryin'!

The poorest service EVER! The manager was more focused on arguing her point than servicing the customers. The waitress needs training. It took 30 minutes to ask us what we would like drink! It took 30 minutes to get our food back, half of it was cold, and the other half was incomplete. Apparently they don't serve fish for brunch, but there was a table with three plates of fish on it and the chef came out to explain why we couldn't get fish...something about inventory (???). I still didn't get my broccoli until the end of dinner. Wow. First the first time in my life, I didn't tip.

Excellent food!
By Sanjeev, 5/1/07
This had to be some of the best soul/southern food I've had in LA. The service was quick and friendly, and you felt like a guest in their home, which is not an easy thing to do (our group had around 20 people).

Soul Food for Everyone
By James Paris, 3/7/06
Located in the shopping center at Glencoe & Maxella, Aunt Kizzy's Back Porch is the West Side's best locale for good down home southern cooking. My favorite is their breaded catfish, especially when served with collard greens and black-eyed peas. Also excellent is their Aunt Johnnie's Fried Chicken, their meat loaf, smothered pork chops (bring your cardiologist along just in case), jambalaya, and hot links. At lunchtime, there is a buffet available. Service can be a little slow in the evenings, but the food IS freshly prepared; so I have no problem with that. If you plan to charge it, note that Aunt Kizzy's only accepts the American Express Card.
