Canter's Fairfax Restaurant

Description

Since 1928, this L.A. standby has been offering 24-hour casual dining in the heart of the Fairfax district. You'll find the food here authentic and the people-watching amazing. Everyone from The Wallflowers to K.D. Lang and Madonna has stopped in to eat here. Favorites include the in-house pickled corned beef pastrami, the hot corned beef, the tender beef brisket and the many offerings from the in-house bakery. Next door is the Kibitz Room, where there's live music most nights. A full bar and decent wines work well with the food.

Potato Salad is the best of all time. We will travel from Marina Del Rey/Venice Beach area, for sandwiches with the Potato Salad. My partner loves it as well! She also like the Pastrami. One of LA's little known secrets.

If you want to go to a real sandwich place, go to giamelas in Los Feliz. Its about 5 Minutes away from Griffiths Park. They have the best Subs you will ever eat. I recommend their Pepper Steak sandwiches. BOMB.

I went to Fairfax High so I have been a Canter's regular for over 30 years. The bakery is awesome and the Kibitz room fun especially after 2:00 am but the sandwiches - come on. They're OK but that's it. Oh and by the way the service has sucked for as long as I've been going there but that's part of their scene which overall is pretty cool. Try Greenblats on Sunset if you want a great pastrami sandwich and are staying in the hood. Langers is also great for deli and Phillipes in Chinatown in the best french dip in LA.

Langer's for Pastrami, the #19. I lived in New York for a long time...there is no comparison. Phillipe's for French Dip (any cut of meat will do, double-dip of course). South Street in Burbank for Philly Cheese Steak's. The best this side of Philly. Canter's...never liked anything there but the chopped liver and bakery. Sorry, but I agree it's overrated.

This place is okay, a little over-hyped. If you want a great beef dip try Busy Bee's in San Pedro.

The Pastrami Reuben; Hands down the best you'll find in So Cal. The 2nd best is The Hat.
