Canter's Fairfax Restaurant

Description

Since 1928, this L.A. standby has been offering 24-hour casual dining in the heart of the Fairfax district. You'll find the food here authentic and the people-watching amazing. Everyone from The Wallflowers to K.D. Lang and Madonna has stopped in to eat here. Favorites include the in-house pickled corned beef pastrami, the hot corned beef, the tender beef brisket and the many offerings from the in-house bakery. Next door is the Kibitz Room, where there's live music most nights. A full bar and decent wines work well with the food.

Like a Deli Should be: Lotta great stuff going on at Canter's. You're welcomed by two things when you enter: a bakery counter with every Jewish pastery under the sun and a deli counter with traditional types of meat I won't touch (e.g. cow tongue). Decor: probably untouched since the mid-60's. Waitress: Been working there since the late 60's. Matzo ball soup and corned beef Ruben: both completely tasty. My buddy says their egg cream sodas are better than those from his favorite deli in NY. Anyway, this place is authentic and the food is phenominal as it should be. Sadly there is nothing like this in the Bay Area.

Outstanding authentic food. I'm pretty sure it's Jewish, matzo ball soup would make it that, I'm guessing, which by the way is delish. Massive menu with lots of different things. The mile high sandwiches are so big, there's now way to bite it like a normal sandwich, you gotta attack from the side. Pickles are nice and crisp, bread and pastries fantastic, breakfasts great, the list goes on. The only thing I didn't like was once I ordered a bagel with smoked salmon, not knowing it would be smoked and still raw, my own fault due to ignorance. Finding a place to park can be a pain, now the lot caddy corner across the street to the north has meters. Steet parking, forget it. Valet is usually full. They got it all, a deli counter to order stuff to go, a bakery counter for bread and sweets, and a restaurant.

I visited Canter's twice here in L.A. and five times at the Treasure Island in Las Vegas. The portions were more than I could handle; the price was right; and most importantly the food was great. That's why I keep going there. I wish their location in L.A. is closer to my home (I live in Palmdale). Always been a good experience...

I love Canter's. You can get a good pastrami a lot of places, but Canter's is an experience. It's comfort. If you judge it just on the food (which is good) you're missing the point. It's an experience, more than the sum of it's parts. When I have friends in town from New York that are feeling a little homesick I send them to Canter's and they love it. People who argue Phillipe's or The Hat have better sandwiches (I love both) miss the point and don't understand the joy of experiencing a good deli with the right vibe. Maybe it requires a certain sensibility?

I visited the Canter's Deli in Las Vegas at the Treasure Island Hotel. We ordered a BLT sandwich and an order of potato cakes but I can't comment on the food as we NEVER received our order and we weren't the only ones. People who ordered after us got their food, as did every to-go order. After 40 minutes and having asked twice what the hold up was, we went up to get a refund but had to stand in line behind others who were also asking for a refund for the same reason. Then the worker at the counter gave us a hard time about giving us the refund! Like I said I can't comment on the food but the service at the Treasure Island location was the WORST I've ever received. I would not recommend anyone to visit this location.
