Canter's

Description

Since 1928, this L.A. standby has been offering 24-hour casual dining in the heart of the Fairfax district. You'll find the food here authentic and the people-watching amazing. Everyone from The Wallflowers to K.D. Lang and Madonna has stopped in to eat here. Favorites include the in-house pickled corned beef pastrami, the hot corned beef, the tender beef brisket and the many offerings from the in-house bakery. Next door is the Kibitz Room, where there's live music most nights. A full bar and decent wines work well with the food.

Like a Deli Should be: Lotta great stuff going on at Canter's. You're welcomed by two things when you enter: a bakery counter with every Jewish pastery under the sun and a deli counter with traditional types of meat I won't touch (e.g. cow tongue). Decor: probably untouched since the mid-60's. Waitress: Been working there since the late 60's. Matzo ball soup and corned beef Ruben: both completely tasty. My buddy says their egg cream sodas are better than those from his favorite deli in NY. Anyway, this place is authentic and the food is phenominal as it should be. Sadly there is nothing like this in the Bay Area.

Loved it! Great atmosphere and the pastrami sandwiches followed by New York cheesecake were excellent. Our server was friendly, although others looked decidedly fierce! Don't go expecting comfort. If you do you will be missing the point.

Oh. My. God. The best corned beef sandwiches I've ever had. So-so service, it can get pretty busy, but worth the wait. Especially half-drunk at 4am!

You want New York Deli? You got it here. Generous portions and they can get you in and out if you're in a hurry or let you linger if you're not. Chicken rice soup is great.

Food is wonderful - lots of flavor and aggressively served by mostly old long time worker servers. The decor is 1960's....elegant...sort of. Price is fair for the amount of food.

A heck of a lot better atmosphere that Katz's in New York, but oozes the same feel, and variety of terrific options for a proper knosh.

It's kitcschy, but it's still a classic. Ignore the gum-smacking elderly waitresses and just focus on your sandwich filled with heaps of meat. Everyone in LA should come here at least once to say they've been here.

Deli food with free (people watching) entertainment thrown in. You never know what kind of people will be eating at Canter's, but there is always someone entertaining to watch. The food is great, try the Reuben or the Matzoh Ball soup. Make sure you stop by the bakery on your way out for some dessert.
