I grew up in the East L.A. area and am familiar with El Tepayac. Food is OK and service is quick. Lines are usually long to get into the restaurant. I now live in Orange County and decided to take a friend/colleague of mine to this restaurant. We are both university professors and I wanted him to experience a real treat.
While we were drinking coffee after dinner and discussing our work at one of the tables, an employee came up to us and asked us to leave. We didn't have more than three sips of coffee when we started getting stares and comments from the waitress and the so-called 'bouncer' that we had over stayed our welcome. I thought this was extremely rude and inconsiderate. I felt like asking for my money back after this happened.
My friend and I realized that money was the only reason they asked us to leave. That is, they wanted to clear the table as quickly as possible so that they could seat other people who were going to eat - and pay. After this experience, I probably will never go back again or recommend it to others. I was trully disappointed at this 'hurry up, eat, and leave' attitude.
My advice is, if you're planning to visit El Tepayac, do not expect conversations to go above a 5th grade level. It is not a 'cerebral' hangout where people can sit together, enjoy each other's company, and discuss world events.
