San Antonio Winery and Maddalena Restaurant
No visit to the City of Angels would be complete without a visit to San Antonio Winery, located just 5 minutes from the Civic Center. Designated by the city as a cultural landmark, this family-owned winery has been operating since 1917. The last of more than 100 wineries that once flourished near the Los Angeles River, San Antonio is legendary for its large variety of fine wines. There is also the wonderful Maddalena Restaurant which offers tempting Italian fare. You can dine inside or on the patio among the wine casks. The winery offers tastings and tours. There are also banquet facilities to seat as many as 300 people.
We have been to the winery before plenty of times, service was not that great this we knew. went for the atmosphere/wine. The food was brought to our table before we were even seated do not go 2 hours before closing they will make you feel rushed. Don't like the way they display the food. A simple menu would be fine. The employees are rude, lazy and can't wait to close to get out of there as we did here the worker in the store say this. Overall, go for wine tasting would skip the meal.
I took my then fiancee to Maddalena since I work around the area and thought it would be a nice treat for the both of us. When we walked in , we were pleasantly surprised with the decorations and the festive atmosphere. Once we set our focus on our appetite, we noticed that the food on the menu was displayed in plastic wrap covered plates on several tables. This reminded me of my elementary school cafeteria. After deciding on what to eat, we were seated and we waited and waited and waited for out salad that went with our chicken and seafood dish. Even though there were only two other couples at the time service was lacking to the point that we had to flag the waiter for water and bread. When our salads finally came, no more than 3 minutes had gone by when our main dishes arrived. We unfortunately had to skip our salads since our warm plates would have gotten cold. As for the food, my chicken dish was lacking flavor. My fiancee's fish was slightly overcooked. The mango/fruit sauce that accompanied the fish helped mask the dry bland taste of the fish. Overall, the restaurant has a nice charm to it but its food and service have a lot to leave desired. I really hope they take notice as there is much potential in there. One last thing, the winery is worth a look. They have free tasting and a nice little room of hard to find cooking oils, herbs, etc..
Who knew there was a winery in the middle of downtown LA? I love the way this place is in the middle of a warehouse district. The food was relatively good but the choices were not so great when I went. It was cafeteria-style and prepackaged (covered with a plastic wrap). Otherwise, a nice novel experience!
My boss took all of the staff to lunch at this winery/restaurant as we walked in i was hit with the great smell of wood and grapes whish made me hungry right away.
The entrance has a display of various wines and the people there are more than happy to help you find the right wine by the way this is a family owned winery, most places you get a menu here they have the food in display so you see what you will get.
I suguesst you try the pasta dishes the shrimp pasta that my coworker got looked specially good.
I dare you to find a friendlier restaurant even the owner was at hand with his wife asking if we had everything we needed and ofcourse suguesting we had wine i had the white wine i usually like red better but this was really good white wine smooth and the cheese cake i ordered with it made it even better.
I suguest you try the tour its a small but very cool place i mean really cool 58degrees.
I have this place pegged for a good date spot i mean good wine and a good meal for under 40 bucks and the romantic atmosphere is exelent but i guess you could book it for a family dinner too oh and on the way out sample the wines at the counter sip and taste your way to just the right kind of wine.
