I've been to chan Dara several times and the service was never that great, however this last evening it was the ultimate worse experience I've ever had. The service was unspeakably horrible, when we first arrived on time, the hostess gave our table away admittedly by mistake to a walk in customer. Secondly when we were seated 10 minutes later we sat there for 20 minutes before anyone ever came over. I went over to the hostess and had to request service, waiters just walked around us as if we were not there. Finally whne someone decided to help us 10 minutes later, the waitress could barely speak or understand english. We had to repect our order 3 times and to make matters worse, the first order came out 30 minutes later, the second order 15 minutes after that and the third never came at all. We complained to the management and the only thing they could say was that they had a new kitchen staff and it was really busy and the know there service is suffering. The problem I had with that excuse was that everyone was getting their food fast and had 2-3 people waiting on their tables, even the party of 7 that was seated behind us 5 minutes later, received prompt attention, water, and service by several. I'm going to assume this didn't happen because we were people of color, but that their service is just HORRIBLE!
Ok.. I had revisited this highly acclaimed restaurant for the 2nd time in 10 years with my gf..
We have a great taste in authentic asian dishes particularly Thai..
I must say it was a disaster and the special evening quickly needed to be forgotten.. We started off with the papaya salad which was way too sweet made for american tastebuds.. was nothing like the traditional refreshing salad it should've been.. Our main courses included fried catfish along with spicy noodles but the the noodles were clumped together and can very well be mistaken for left over panda express re-heated in the microwave. The beef mixed in with the noodle were anything but tender and cut with imperfection. Some pieces were much thicker than the other the texture of the meat was a mess. I had to ask for chile to eat my second bite. The cat fish was aesthetically presentable but the sauce that accompanied the catfish was a disaster. Again the sauce was too sweet and simply disguised the taste of the fish itself. After barely denting our main course we had hoped to repair the evening with a desert that is hard to mess up. We order mango with sticky rice. The mango was fresh but the sticky rice had a distinct taste that I could not describe. Chan Dara has been known for their beautiful hostesses and waitresses but even thats changed. The women were below average looking and were dressed like market vendors in the streets of bangkok. I am uncertain if management has changed but this is very different restaurant from what I had remembered from the 90's. I like to see the glass half full but it was very difficult to find anything positive about our eveneing exept the refreshing taste of Amstel light which I drank out of the bottle. I hope my review has been helpful... Please do not expect too much if you insist on visiting this fast foot take that is comparable to Panda Express...
Chan Dara is very cute, the service is excellent and the food is amazing! The meats are outstanding, so thick, juicy and tasty! The coconut rice doesn't sound like much but it is sooo good. The only slightly bad thing is it's a little pricey.
