Philippe - the Original
Since 1918, this place has been serving the best French-dipped sandwiches in the world. That seems logical because it was Philippe, The Original who claims to have invented the juicy concoction nearly 100 years ago. The prices haven't changed that much since; a roast beef, pork, turkey, ham or leg of lamb sandwich will satiate your palate and leave your pocket without a dent! Want a cup of coffee? Head here for a steaming cup at only 50cents.
I have been to LA six times over the past 7 years and each time I am there I always visit Philippe's for their French dipped beef sandwiches and homemade lemonade. I think their sandwiches are fabulous and the staff are very friendly and nice. I hope to go to LA again next year sometime and please God I will be able to go to Philippe's once again for their fabulous food. By the way I live in southern Ireland. Keep up the good work Philippe.
An L.A. ICON of a Restraunt, others have came and gone over the years that this place has been in business. Stood the test of time. Ive heard of the place for years and have only REALLY Started to eat there with in the last 7 months and I really like their food. Ive been get a little more experimental with their food lately and have been eating the Beef Stew and Im impressed. Dont miss or mess with the Mustard/Horse Radish on the tables in massive amounts, You will Learn to RESPECT IT. The staples here are the Chili, Beef Sandwhiches and Lemonade, I dont care for the side dishes too much taste like they came from a container at the market rather then home made. The nostalgia of the place will take you way way back in Los Angeles History, take some time to read and look at what is displayed on the walls. And ENJOY....................
This is a wonderful sandwich shop. My dad and I used to stop here when we would visit L.A. We always made a stop before we went to the airport and get the macaroni salad and a lamb sandwich with their extra spicy mustard (that stuff is murder if you aren't prepared for it.) We even nearly missed a flight because of our trip to Phillipe. Definitely not to miss!
Been going to Phillipe's since I was a small child. We always sat in the booths in the back, and I loved looking at all the circus memorabilia and the paper straws. Definately a must for any tourists visiting China Town or Olvera Street and just across the street from the train station so make a quick stop off the metro to have a bite.
