Description

Since 1918, this place has been serving the best French-dipped sandwiches in the world. That seems logical because it was Philippe, The Original who claims to have invented the juicy concoction nearly 100 years ago. The prices haven't changed that much since; a roast beef, pork, turkey, ham or leg of lamb sandwich satiate your palate and suit your pocket! Want a cup of coffee? Head here for a steaming hot cup.

Come to Philippe s when you re in town.: Open daily 6:00am -- 10:00pm. Thanks to KCET s program, Visiting With...Huell Howser , I have visited this nearly 105 years old cafe several times. Famous for its original French Dipped Sandwiches that were created there. Opened in 1908, but has been in its present building since 1951 and they still have the sawdust on the floor. From city officials to celebrities to out-of-town travelers, many people come here for lunch. They also serve Egg Breakfasts and Pancakes & French Toast Breakfast from 6:00am until 10:30am. If you are at Union Station and have one hour and a half to spare, go outside of Union Station (westward), cross Alameda Street and turn right, walk northward a couple of blocks and there is Philippe s at the corner. There are no waiters. You order and pay at the counter. Menu on wall to your right. NO CREDIT CARDS allowed. Cash accepted. Take your lunch tray to table. French dip roast beef Sandwich, macaroni salad, custard pudding, many varieties of food is here.Check out the menu at www.philippes.com. College students to seniors like to group here. Nighttime for family dinner. Saturday and Sunday usually has a sports crowd. Gum stand, big television set, inside phone booths and security on watch.

This place is terrific! I learned of Philipe's a few years ago when I saw it on Man Versus Food. Everything here is great. They have a huge menu, and they still serve coffee for 9 cents!. There french dip is great.....be sure to have the bread "double dipped!"

GREAT, beef sandwich. I'm FROM chicago and go to L.A. every 6 weeks or so. I always take time to go there for a sandwich, and pie. GREAT PIE TOO!!!

Don't understand what all the hype is about. I've been there twice. The second time a few months later on the chance maybe my first visit was just a fluke. The food is NOTHING to rave about. Sliced meat sandwiches are small for what you pay. I got a double meat and it was the size of a regular at Jersey Mike's. Like soggy bread? Then you'll like this place. I don't. Moist is fine, but waterlogged isn't. Cafeteria like seating and questionable sanitation, plus long lines. I felt like I was eating at an airport resturant paying high prices for poor food.

This place is AMAZING! I loved their burgers! Their fries were perfect too. Not soggy or over cooked. I loved it.

Philippe's is for those who appreciate history and "fast food" that isn't sodium and preservative laden like McDonald's, etc. Philippe's is a throwback to the depression era and the atmosphere/decor speaks of that. It isn't over rated at all - it's simple food, economically presented, and quite delicious. I love it as do my two kids. It's great to take people to so they can see one of the few old L.A. treasures still standing.

I really like this place, been going for years and it never seems to change. I love the Beef Sandwich "Lightly Dipped" with Bleu Cheese. I order sides of Cole Slaw and Pickled Beets which I put some of both on the Sandwich it's self. Can't beat it! Parking is almost always available except on nights the Dodgers play and lunch hour during the work week...it, can be a little scarce during those times but there is usually metered street parking in the area when the two parking lots seem impossible to use.
