STAY AWAY
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 12/17/05
I have been eating Szechuan chinese for nearly all my life, and never have I encountered this greasiness, and flavorlessness. Yikes! The restaurant decor is decieving, very nicely redone, nice bar, but our first tip shoulda been not many people in there! We left 3 barely touched dinners on the table, and our wallets much lighter.

Honestly, the only reason we went here was because Palace de Jade was closed for the new year's... we should have just gone home. Me and my boyfriend both ordered the lunch special which was somewhat small and lacked items Palace de Jade included. He ordered General's chicken while I ordered spicy garlic chicken. The main dishes were all right but the fried rice was utterly tasteless. I've cooked better fried rice drunk! Not only that but the hot mustard was watered down. I was almost tempted to bring some of my own from home! The glasses were dirty and the ceiling did not seem all too sanitary. The fish tanks were only there to distract you from everything else. By the way, I've had some tasteless eggrolls in my life but the ones I had there had less flavor than polystyrene. And to make matters worse, the sweet and sour sauce I dipped it in (only once) tasted like liquid detergent. The menu seemed to have a good variety of options and really, I don't expect the same quality I got in China but even for American standards this was crap! I'm sorry my boyfriend spent the money there but at least the General's chicken was ok.

I was invited to a dinner there a few weeks ago. We waited around a table for more than an hour without a first dish. Most of the dishes were not worth the prices. My friend was automatically charged big tips without his agreement. I was full before eating any!!!

A wonderful and friendly environment with great food a service. The owners are friendly and always willing to help those who are courteous enough to simply ask. I've been there many times in the last few years and have yet to be disappointed. Unlike some other reviews, I've always found the food excellent and the company great. The owners are always happy to talk through any problems that we may have had and offer any assistance to make the night more enjoyable. The entire resturant has a great family atmosphere yet at the same time retaining a certain elegance. It's a perfect place for a large family dinner or even a nice quite date. Even dining alone is never boring, as one of the staff is usually willing to stop and chat when they have time. Eating dinner at the bar is always a fun experience for me, the bartender always being welcoming and willing for a laugh. The prices are very reasonably, especially for the large portions that you receive. Some of the dishes are only available at this restaurant and I've yet to find another place in Reno that servesa few of them. Only recently have I discovered some of their specialty dishes that are available only through their authentic and traditional Chinese menu. The cook was even kind enough to take orders directly from us, showing their dedication and friendly attitude. The waitresses are always greeting us with a smile, never minding it when we ask questions about the dishes are ask for reccomendations. In total, I've always enjoyed Szechuan Garden in the past, and I know I will enjoy this restaurant for many years to come. With great food and staff, it's bound to be around for quite awhile.

I definitely think this place is one of the better Chinese restaurants in town. Especially now that I've discovered the authentic menu. It has some really unique dishes that are extremely tasty. If you love to try new things and love when those new things happen to be great food, you should definitely give this place a try. The great thing is that if you go with friends or family that aren't quite as adventurous as you are, they have traditional americanized Chinese food too like general's chicken (which is delicious by the way) and beef broccoli; you know, the classics. They also have this type of Chinese fondue. You get a big pot of broth (either a spicy or regular; I also saw another table order a pot with half and half!) and you get to order from a whole list of meats and veggies to cook in the broth (the broth is on some type of portable burner). It's different but really good! I went with a bunch of friends so it was really fun. We just took our time eating and had a blast! That's another thing, we never felt rushed and the servers were all very nice. My favorite items on the regular menu have to the the generals chicken, lettuce wrapped chicken and sweet and pungent shrimp. My favorite appetizer are the garlic chicken wings. They're not really Chinese food I don't think but they sure are good. On the authentic menu I really really like the smoked scallop and tofu soup and the fish in roasted chili sauce (it's extremely spicy but oh so delicious). The items I like the most for the fondue are beef, mushrooms, and tofu. But I do recommend ordering this when you have a few people to join you so that you can order a nice variety of items and not have a whole lot left over. Oh, the only thing is, I think you can only get the fondue during the winter (don't take my word for it though, I'm not quite sure). Overall, the atmosphere is very nice. It's clean and the people are friendly. The prices are about average when compared to restaurants in its class (give or take a dollar). Of course their not as low as some of the Chinese buffets or fast food places but you have to pay for quality. And that brings me to the quantity. Man, are their portions big! They're definitely healthy portions. My boyfriend and I can split an order of general's chicken with a side of rice and we're golden. We normally order two dishes with rice because I like variety and we always take leftovers home. Some of the negative reviews on this place talk about how the prices are just so extremely high. It's totally not true. On some dishes they might be a dollar higher than other places but believe me, when you see the portions, you won't mind forking over that dollar. Also I've noticed that their alcohol prices are rather low. I got a good sized martini made with Absolut (not some cheapo vodka) for I think it was $7. Another time I just got a glass of their house chardonnay. It was only something like $4. I went to this Italian restaurant that charged $9 for a glass of house wine and it was disgusting. Food Flavor/Quality: Great! Variety: Authentic menu, Fondue, and regular Chinese Price: Fair Service: Wonderful Atmosphere: Very nice and clean All together, i really recommend that everyone give this place a try. I know it's been around for something like 20 years now with the same owners so they must be doing something right.

Szechuan Garden is one of my favorite restaurants in town and a 'must try' for dining in Reno, being one of the best Chinese restaurants in the area. The atmosphere is beautiful, clean, and sophisticated with gorgeously kept fish tanks down the middle of the restaurant that kids absolutely adore. The multi-lingual staff is friendly, always willing to help or provide assistance; the food is great, not to mention moderately priced. Among my favorites are the jumbo spicy garlic chicken wings and the general chicken, both which are mouth-watering. Another favorite is the pot stickers, which are always homemade individually and served with a specialty sauce. Delicious and delectable!

Some of the better chinese in Reno
By Raquelita, 12/18/06
I moved to Reno from the Bay Area and unlike the one review I read, I found the food among some of the better I've tasted in Reno. There is a reason many of the Chinese Restaurants in Reno are less pricey and that is that they provide less flavor and less quality. Granted it is not the best Chinese, however I've yet to find that here in Reno. It is among a few of the better chinese restaurants in Reno. I found the service fast, polite and friendly and the food tasty. I continue to frequent this establishment and always have a positive experience.
