I have eaten at Makino on three different occasions while visiting from California. The first time was fantastic, the second was mediocre, and the last time Oct 2008, the food tasted old actually lousy. Makino has gone down hill in my opinion.

Hungry?

If you like Todai, you'll love Makino's. We think this place is much better. Tons of food, not just sushi. The sushi is great for an all you can eat buffet. One of our favorite spots in Vegas.

Extremely disappointed! Their business hours in the window clearly state they are open until 9:00pm with a big "OPEN" sign in red sitting on a chair through their glass window just to the left of the door after entering. We got there on a Tuesday night about 8:10pm and were turned away. Why? Because they decided that since they were slow, they were going to close early. I guess it would've been a little more acceptable if they would've put a notice up stating they they may close earlier on some days. After all six of us entered, one girl asked, "how many?". I told her six. Then promptly after that, another girl said, "I'm sorry but were closing at 8:30pm tonight." WTF??? BAD BUSINESS PRACTICES! To add to the disappointment, you have to park in a parking structure far away since it is in an outlet stores strip mall and not to mention, it's pretty far from other restaurants so finding a decent alternative may be cumbersome to some. By the time you finally get to eat after being turned away, it definitely leaves a bad taste in your mouth.

I had dinner there on a Saturday at 5:30pm when the doors opened. All the food was tasted fresh, plenty of selection, oysters, shrimp were delicious. Many Asians were eating there, being new to Sushi i saw this as a good sign, albeit a bit sterotyping...sori Waitress was very prompt removing dirty plates and was always attentive filling my iced tea.

My husband and I thought this was going to be a great place to have wonderful Japanese food so we didn't mind paying the $25 per person. After arriving at 8pm on a weekday, the hostess sat us at a table with no warning. At 8:15pm, after barely getting my kids' hands washed before eating, we heard the announcement stating the food will be put away in 15 minutes. We had 15 min. to get all the food we wanted. Immediately after the announcement, all the help started putting the food away!! It was a mad dash to all the stations so we could get something decent to eat! It was not a good experience. The lady at the front should have told us this BEFORE we were sat down. We would have opted to come another time. To top off the experience, I ate something bad and had digestive problems for the rest of the night - it was awful!!!

I followed what other reviewers had said about Makino and I must say It was the biggest mistake I did in Vegas. I payed $60 + for 2 and was extremely disapointed. The food was average but not worth the $24.95 per person charge. If however you do decide to go to have lunch or dinner to Makino, do not go because of the sushi go because of variety of dishes they offer. Next time i'll just go to a real sushi restaurant and pay the $60 on the good stuff.

Good sushi with lots of choices for non-sushi eaters
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 7/19/08
This is a great restaurant when some people want sushi, some people don't but everyone is hungry. The location is nice because there is ample close by parking, the inside is nicely done and the restaurant isn't so big that it is a trek to the buffet. At dinner they also have snow crab, oysters on the half shell and other seafood options. The downside is that they do everything... okay instead of well. The sushi looks nice but often the rice is too hard or the quality of ingredients isn't the best, or it is just too big to eat. Some people may say this is normal for an All You Can Eat (ACYE) sushi place, this isn't true for the competition in the valley (Sushi Factory, Sushi Twister, and Sushi Tachi to name a few). The cooked food is often overcooked (which is horrible for snow crab, and the fish and shellfish they have on the steam tables). In short, they sacrifice quality for quantity. Again there are ACYE restaurants that charge the same amount but have much more consistent food, however you don't have the feast for your eyes in those places or the chocolate fountain so I guess it is a choice you have to make.

Vegas Sushi Buffets What's the best all-you-can-eat seafood buffet in Vegas? The hands-down winner, is Makino Gourmet Sushi and Seafood buffet. You can't beat it for the price, or any price! Featuring fresh seafood, produce and vegetables delivered daily, Makino is the best place in town to get your daily dose of vegetables and fruit. For a tad more than the local all you can eat salad place, you can have your choice of hot and cold entries including soup, salad, tempura, sushi, teriyaki chicken, beef, and much more. A several yards long dessert section features home-made deserts baked daily, and so delicious, some people consciously try to save room - although it's hard with all the tasty dishes competing for your attention. You can even get hand-scooped ice cream in a cone! Don't forget the yard-high chocolate fountain! Mmmmm... decadent! Very. And did we mention it's all you can eat? And Makino means it. Every single item is all you can eat. That means you can have as much as you want, for as long as you're there. Unlike some places which limit your dining time to an uncomfortable 45 minutes, for example. Makino has a long and respected lineage dating back to the Todai chain in California, widely held to be the originator of the all-you-can-eat sushi and seafood buffet genre. Locations at Flamingo and Decatur, Premium Outlets and Eastern, Las Vegas, see website www.makinorewards.com for more info and specials and to sign-up for the VIP newsletter P.S. They even have uni (sea urchin) at the Eastern location.

Don't get too excited about this place; it's no more than average. True, there is a wide selection of sushi, but none of it stands out. If you're looking for a lot of mediocre food for a low price, this may be for you. I had read the reviews before having lunch there, and had higher expectations, but was disappointed. Will not return. The $19 cost listed is for lunch including tax and tip, but w/o additional drinks.
