WOW! Forget the rest. This is the best!!! The freshest sushi in town. No one comes close. My Japanese friends agree. The services is fun and fast. Even after 7 when it gets busy. Ok, its not the most glamorous place in town. But the food speaks for itself. Fresh, made to order and always yummy in my tummy.
After 9 years in business, Sumo remains the leader in the non-strip sushi bar catagory! Sumo's original creations (such as Johnny's Special, WO7, something wrong etc) are being copied in re-created in many of the new sushi bars around town. Many of these special sushi names were creations of the chefs and their loyal customers. Be sure to say hi to owner Jay and he may create a new sushi dish especially for you!!
We went to the one that is located on Warm Spings near Durango for dinner last Sunday. The service was bad. They gave the wrong food on two occassions. The Pork Katsu was overpriced, dry, and the portion was small. It came with a salad on the plate even though it already came with the same salad on the side. The salad dressing was bland. My wife ordered a tempura which was ordinary. Any buffet in town with tempura would compare better.
i called to find out about their menu and the lady on the phone was very rude, and even hung up on me! all i wanted to know about was their noodle dishes. sheesh. i dont know if it was her poor english or bad manners.
When ever business travel brings me to Las Vegas, I always try to make it to Sumo's for dinner. Being from Calif I am very picky about my sushi and fresh seafood. Sumo's has 2 locations, my favorite is their original restaurant off of Sunset and Green Valley Pkwy, its a short 15 minute cab ride from the strip and well worth it. My favorites are the Tunai Karai (spicey tuna) which is very similar to Hawaiian poke, Kampachi which is wild yellowtail that is thinly sliced and served with a light lemon, tomato, onion vinagerette dressing with a thinly sliced jalapena pepper on top. If you like creamy spicy with a little bit of crunch try the famour WO7 roll, or the Big Easy Roll, which uses fried soft shell crab. Sumo's a nice selection of premium sakes that are served at room temperature or chilled, the Korean? Raspberry Wine is also a must try. Be sure to bring a few friends so you can try more items are the rolls are quite big and filling. Oh yeah, don't forget to buy the sushi chef a drink (beer or sake), you will be taken care of for the rest of the evening.
In summary, Sumos is a great local sushi bar that is very much a local las vegas sushi eaters paradise. Don't let casual dining atmosphere fool you, they make some very serious sushi rolls and innovative dishs here.
i used to eat at Osaka on Sunset, but it closed leaving the Sahara location open and that was too far away...so i started eating at sumo...i loved the quiet atmosphere...been eating there since 1997...haven't found a better place
We eat sushi at least twice a month and this is the only place we go. The staff is wonderful and the food is excellent. They don't really cater to young children, but they do have some foods that children will eat like french fries or chicken, some things that are on the menu.
Their specialty rolls are the greatest, and if you like avocado and soft shell crab, you have to try the cherry blossom!!! It is by far the best. I have never had a bad experience here. If you go alot be sure to get the bonus card, and use it every time.
